Tim,
Our view is wing-wang is too complex to change/update - it works because it is simple. It is also very much part of the character of the boat.
the idea is simply that the pole outhaul is a part of the halliard - using a piggy-back block like the 49er - so one string and cleat up and one uncleat and string down. Like every other assymmetric boat! the carbon pole reduces friction (tapered and lighter) and makes this all work.
As it is, the 400 is quite distinctive. On the water they stand out from all the copy-cat SMOD rigs as well as the older classes. I think that's worth something, it gets us noticed in a handicap race. It means that a visitor to our club instantly sees that the place to be in the fast fleet is in a 400.
In some ways I am pleased to hear that - but i am not sure it is the view of the market - that cloth is being sidelined because the only classes to use it now are 200/400/600. Thats not to say they will not beep making it - it is just not competitively priced anymore. |

Put me down as a positive reaction to all the changes:-
Vinylester resin: Building a stronger boat can't be a bad thing. There is a difference in speed between old and new boats now due to hull aging this won't change if the material changes it's just that in 10 years time we'll have a better stock of boats with a good upgrade path. In my view keeps a fleet alive and exist now anyway that's why old boats are worth less. I'm not going to do any repars myself (or pay for them... I have insurance for that) anyway so what do I care if the materials are a little out of the ordinary?
Modernise the fore and aft sail plan: The rig does look fairly dated, the main sheet loads are high, the jib life is not great and a large bit of the world is out of the helms view. Reducing cost and adding some gust response would be good. I'm sure the development of the sail plan will iron out any issues discovered during testing and discussion here;-). I don't have any sailing school predudices (never been to one) and I think the pictures here look great. Introduce an adjustable deck control: yes, just yes! Bowsprit: Weight out of the ends can't be bad and I was surprised (because I had forgotton) about needing to pull 2 strings when one could do it. One large bang on the head this season during a gybe means I have a very positive feeling about going carbon. This may not be the most thought out or technical response to this but it comes from somone who sailed an RS400 at the beginning of the classes life (I bought 415 when it was about a year old), own one now and really want to see it continue as class because it is a superb boat even if it's showing it's age.

I completely agree with that.
Turning it into a straight pole would ruin the deep soaking ability of the 400 and reduce the RTC appeal.
So making it carbon would even ease the load (maybe) so thats good too.

And that's a damn shame because the Mainsails last forever, and I bought one last year and haven't really used it.

This would be a really nice touch.
![]() Having the rig tension adjustable on water is nice enough, but the ram is quite difficult to adjust.
However, I would be concerned about the ability for bods to get it wrong, and you could end up with a load of broken masts.

Is there something better than the current 'snapper' arrangement to limit the amount of water getting in around the tapered pole? It's quite a big hole quite low down on the bow.
Nice little design exercise for someone!

Nick - does that mean we will be seeing new sails for the 200 and 600 in due course then?

i hope not! But seriously both 200 and 600 mainsails could be less expensive.
