Now the new protocol is out, with multihulls being used is Ben our best bet as skipper?
I know he could still be the best but unlike with a monohull his reputation when it matters is probably second to none, sailing cats is completely different.
best uk multi sailors could include,
Hugh Styles
Ellen Mcarthur (just remember her in the car on top gear!)
Tony Bullimor

Apart from these suggestions some tongue in cheek who would be best suited with the sad departure of Reg White.

Please note I am not a multi sailor so could easily have missed the obvious.

Regards
Gordon

Ben should be on the boat, Ian Percey and Bart also, why have these sailors with all their tactical experience and not use them as part of a Brit campaign?  For helms, you could try anyone of Paul C-J, Mike Golding, Ben, Shirley R, Rob Greenhalgh as Brit helms, or search abroad, why not Mitch Booth, Yves Loday, any of the french multi driver experts?

This cup will be won or lost off the water primarily, IMO.  The learning curve required to design, develop, build, maintain, develop and field a really top class entry will be huge - it favours the two teams embroiled in it last time (or should that be envolved?) as they have some <serious> applicable multi & rig design-dev experience they can re-apply, for a Brit team, the obvious place to start would be to bring in some very clever UK academics from the aerospace/aerodynamics, materials and sports science side to bump up the existing tech-team and come up with something(s) really innovative inside the 'box' of the new rule.  Boats will be quite different to what exists today, sailing them (the sports science side) will also bring many new challenges.

Management of Origin is sound already, sure they're already cooking plans.....

Well the UK is a world leader in an aeordynamic and materials based engineering sport. Motor Racing, and if you remember Lotus built a bike for Chris Boardman to use in the 1992 Olympics. A tie up of that sort could be very good news for Team Origin.

I believe McLaren are already helping with the British Olympic team so they would be a possibility and I would approach Prodrive as they have a broader area of expertise. And given that the Defendering team is entitled BMW Oracle Racing it seems an obvious way forward.

The other thing TO have done is poach some talent from Alinghi, who seem to of shut up shop.

am I wrong in thinking the tank-testing facilities at Southampton are the best in the world right now?

I would have thought for the design team we have an obvious choice in Nigel Irons who designed a load of Orma 60's and B&Q etc.

So what will the tight 3 do, Olympics or sign for another team. I hope this isn't some missguided attempt to blackmail BMWO after all the AC is a 1 on 1 match race. They have a COR for the AC they need no more.
I have to say SKM seems more interested in the business and politics than sailing. LE is into both as far as I can see.

The Southampton tank is fairly mediocre by international standards (but the staff are good).  The QinetiQ tank at Haslar is much bigger and better, and the Wolfson Unit (the Southampton Uni spin-off company) use it sometimes, but it is still small compared to some tanks in the US, China etc.  But the facilities aren't everything, it takes a lot of skill and experience to get good tank test data.
