Erm, Tim will be with you just as soon as he's climbed out of the bathtub full of ibuprofen gel . Reading the look on Tim's face when he found out that the fourth race was going to be double-distance I think the difference between them could be summarised as; one of them has some toestraps and the other one's a hiking boat.

Sorry been busy at work and new forum software keeps loggin me out (re-typed this 3 times)….grrrr

In answer to your question…

They are completely different boats.

I don’t say that lightly, they may fit into the “single handed hiking asymmetric” label but they couldn’t be more different if they tried.

I had only ever sailed the prototype 100 before that’s why I had a go.

Sailing a new boat makes a completely new set of muscles start working, and with the 10.2 rig I was certainly getting a proper work out, and after 3 races in that wind I knew I wasn’t up for another long one, but I started it, sailed the first beat (went the wrong way tbh) rounded the windward, hoisted the kite, looked behind me and saw “black” (lots more wind), in front was a wall of white (upturned hulls), I dropped the kite and limped home to nurse my aching/cramping muscles (wimp).

I posted one good result (6th in first race) and the rest not too far off the pace until I kept tipping it in, once just blown flat upwind rounding the leeward, and the others on the gybes, when the wings dig in you’re in trouble.

Trying to get through the “gate from hell” downwind to make the finish line was difficult if in a huge gust and in one race having beaten Mr Childs upwind and had a good downwind leg I gybed to make the gate, wings dug in and there I sat, spinny flogging, main out to the max, me fully hiked / perched on the side, half capsized, half not, and the mob creamed passed to the finish. I had to wait until the lull so I could flatten it off (spinny still hoisted) to make the finish line….grrrr

RS’s “Junior” wanted to borrow the boat on Sunday, so I let him have a go.

Funniest moment would have to be on the start line with Demo’s port biased line gap that shut with the shift and the only option was a “sambuka” induced spectacular piss in….made me chuckle.

The main difference would be the lack of wings on the 100, you have to keep it really flat to avoid making mistakes.

I would make the kicker and downhaul control lines longer (deffo) and thicker (maybe) as I found to get a grip I needed to wrap lines around my hand for purchase.

They needed adjusting all through the race, a lot.

I am not surprised that people are gravitating to the 8.4 rig, however it is obviously possible to make the 10.2 shift as well.

For info, I was sailing on hole 3 on the stays and number 4 on the “mast gate ram thing” (technical term).

If I had sailed on Sunday I would have dropped it down to hole 2 and maybe move the ram lower as well, however TBH I was maxed out on kicker so I am not sure what difference it would have made???

If you haven’t already done it, I thoroughly recommend the elastic on the horse at the back, it totally gets rid of the annoying mainsheet round tiller problem, if you are in the habit (and you probably are) or over steering through tacks or gybes.

I appreciate being given the opportunity to try and I thoroughly recommend people trying all boats, it's the only way to find out what is right for you.

Now I’m off to Alassio for the last Volvo Cup D-One event before Gold cup in Valencia.

Cheers

absolutely priceless Mr Brace, priceless. I assume that GRF hasn't seen this yet, or is of course trying to work out how to use the software for an equally witty repost. God almost makes me want to get a 100 now to join in the banter properly

Where have you been Mr Buddah? And anyway God didn't gift Phantom sailors the means to gybe them.

Hi Guys,

Fantastic weekend, brilliant boat, just loved it, and great that the fleet is friendly.

Just a a couple of suggestions, do you think there would be benefits if the association allowed racers to choose their sail each day?  Like the 600s and the 18 foot skiffs

Sounds silly on the face of it but..

The big guys can enjoy blatting around when it's windy
The little guys can enjoy the big rig when its light
May sound expensive, as it favours people with two sails, but actually, over several years, its the same wear on tear, just on two sails not one, and the two will last longer
More fun for everyone
More learning for everyone
Less regulation/need for policing
Weather forecasting is part of the skills - need to get right for the sail you commit to on the day
proper fleet results/racing, instead of what we have now, fleet racing (one fleet) and two sets of results

Second suggestion...
Can we pursade RS to make a kiddy/youth/ladies/lightweights rig, same mast with some sticking out, same boom kicker etc.  either same kite or smaller kite

What do you think - its massive fun already but just imagine how much more it would be, we could blatting about in enormous winds with a little sail, the regattas would be more fun in a wider wind band, we might attract youngsters and ladies

Hope to see you all again soon

You neither I suppose....

Anyway that's cos we are all too fat to get across a boat without a hand from someone else, preferably with a forklift. I did use to sail a 300 so I reckon I could probably gybe one ok, but to be honest I'll never have the money to own a 100 in the near future so you'll just have to guess whether I can or not.
