They're saying in that report, that there's 'nearly no difference' twixt the 10.2
& 8.4.. That wholey depends on wether the sails are powered, if there's enough wind for the 8.4, then granted the 10.2 is so much parasitic drag.. But it's a question of the threshold... which if I were to guess is in my case at least sub 8 knots. and up to sub 12 knots for most heavier folk.. Above that - true, no real difference with the 8.4 being possibly quicker the windier it gets.. |

I need to source a GPS device to play with on the 100. Any recommendations on a fairly basic one ? |

Too late Simon, you'll never beat the speed I hit on Sunday afternoon!
Unfortunately I don't have a GPS so I have no idea how fast it was (but the fish was THIS big) & I have no intention of going that fast again anytime soon. It was main fully out, flat out on the back toestraps and still getting the nose wet; the level of concentration was absurd. The whole race was run in conditions similar to the squall from Friday afternoon only this time it was against the tide as well! The look on the faces of some of the yachts scrambling to get out of my way will be scorched on my memory for some time to come ![]() |

Hi Simon, Best portable GPS for sailing in the Navi GT-31 http://gps-speed.co.uk/gps-speed-windsurf.html By far the best unit out there and now the only one recommended by gps.-speedsailing.com for windsurf and kitesurf speed sailing. Much better value, more reliable and a lot more accurate that the previous Garmin Foretrex type units. You can download GPS Action Replay from gps-speedsurfing.com and this offers excellent analysis of the data including track plotting onto google maps and important for sailing, excellent VMG analysis. Its very easy to exchange tracks with your mates and re-run the race (playing the tracks simultaneously) - good fun and very useful to see where you lost out or gained ! There is another unit (seen it on the Sail Racer homepage) which is a data logger but with a built in mobile transmitter using a tracking tariff - not used this yet but with a bit of setting up you can relay your position to a PC (could be in the Clubhouse) so those ashore can follow the race. Hope this helps ! chris |

Ok so the big day of delivery is fast approaching, just need to decide what rig I am going to get. I am 6 foot 3 and 80 kgs so right on the borderline from what i understand, 99% of my sailing is on the sea so I am still thinking 8.4 What do you guys think?

I'm only 5'8" and about 10.5 stone (approx 67kg) and obviously on the 8.4 sailing on the sea. I think if your 6'3 and 80kg you should be seriously considering the 10.2 as the 8.4 will seem pretty small alot of the time. Cheers, Keith. |

That is my worry, my test sail was in very gusty and shifty winds up to about 18 knots, that was in the 10.2 and it caught me off guard a couple of times. Perhaps this wouldnt be the case on the sea?

Hmmm, I would say stick with the 8.4 for now
and concentrate on eating some pies. Tim Weedon was sailing an 8.4 at Fed Week at 87kg (apparently) and did really well across all conditions with the only noticeable drop in performance being when the wind really got up. I'm 95kg and 6'2" and consider the 10.2 a challenge (maybe something to do with the prevalence of F4-5 conditions since I've bought the boat). Remember that the only time when the mainsail size will have an impact on speed is upwind, it's largely redundant once the kite is up. |
