I think more people are staying in Radials rather than moving up as well. Although that doesn't necessarily explain the size of the drop completely.

The Solo is doing well at my club too, plenty of boats around at different budgets, they seem to take a reasonable range of weights, and they're great for those of us with tatered knees due to too many years in a Laser. There doesn't seem to be a huge difference in speed between the various builders/ages of boat in the fleet, hence we get some great classic fleet sailing. The Solo CA seems very active too. Anyone who disses the Solo is one boat short of a flotilla in my book..

Doubt if you'll beat the Solos, and they don't just get good national turnouts: second biggest fleet to the 200s at Fed week (40ish?) plus big fleets at Salcombe and Abersoch and maybe a couple of other places The 200s and Solos seem to be just exactly the right type of boat for ordinary club sailers to sail, I just don't know what makes them travel as well... if anyone can work out the magic formula they can make a fortune!

Yes, we get that in the 12fters. You need to be in bed by 8am, otherwise you have to go sailing still pi**ed.

Quite simply, there IS good class racing in other much better boats and so
the normal sailors are getting out of there! A laser sailor at my club has
recently bought a supernova (which he sails in the evenings at another club)
and for the life of him he can't work out why he's been sailing a laser all
these years.

As for the circuit, I'm not sure how much it may have changed but I seem to
remember a "bed by 8'o'clock" attitude. That's fine if you've gone there for
no other reason than to get a good result BUT most people are going to a
champs for a holiday and want to be around like minded people whereby
there is good racing AND a good social scene.

There were less than 50 Lasers at last years Nationals and currently there are only 6 boats entered !!!

I find that amazingly low given the sheer number of Lasers in circulation. Is this down to Olympic status, or have Laser sailors moved into more modern boats?
