Not sure about the 'hardened' idea - that is somewhat different to hardcore - you can be hardcore at any age, and level of experience - it just means that you are wanting to put time and effort into a boat, and that will show in event turnouts for a class. It is great that there are young people willing to take the effort, and not just the midlife crisis brigade!

No; I am saying we have a good spread; I'd guess the majority have children is thata is relevant. We had 10 people under 21 & 11 people over 45 ... the rest in the middle. A pretty healthy distribution. |

The class is doing well because of key people, to many to name here but to me Paul manning, Rick, and Sten and kit who spent boatloads of time training for free at Rutland. I joined the class assocition before I got a boat, this is because of the good help from the musto site, thanks Rick, if you have people pushing the fleet along it just grows. Richard Allen did the same at Carsington for the 700 fleet. If you want a good fleet you require some top people to push it along, that and a great boat. Edited by Wrighty |

It is a lot about location. The RS200s are in Scotland this year and its also a Garda year so it will probably be the lowest turnout for years with many people picking Garda over Scotland, they return to Weymouth in 2011 so turnouts will return to the 120+ boat level again. I think by now most of the mature classes know their membership and will go where the members prefer.

Not entirely sure that that is correct about the 200's the
class association have been telling us that we should prepare for 150 boats! |

70 boats entered so far for the Phantoms, 2 weeks to go. Biggest single hander fleet this year? (apart from the youth)

I find that amazingly low given the sheer number of Lasers in circulation. Is this down to Olympic status, or have Laser sailors moved into more modern boats? |

Quite simply, there IS good class racing in other much better boats and so
the normal sailors are getting out of there! A laser sailor at my club has recently bought a supernova (which he sails in the evenings at another club) and for the life of him he can't work out why he's been sailing a laser all these years. As for the circuit, I'm not sure how much it may have changed but I seem to remember a "bed by 8'o'clock" attitude. That's fine if you've gone there for no other reason than to get a good result BUT most people are going to a champs for a holiday and want to be around like minded people whereby there is good racing AND a good social scene. |
