Really, with an open transom you'd have to have a really good reason not to go in via the transom.

Why would you be in the water? If you capsize step off the board into the boat. |

If you watch the vids of the d-one there is one where a
guy climbs in from in front of the wing, seemed to work pretty well, boat balanced, in perfect control and didn't struggle at all to lift himself up, in my experience as soon as you go to the back of a boat and climb in your at risk of the superman |

One of the reasons the D1 will be well behaved when post capsize is the lack of shrouds allowing the boom to blow downwind, if it would have hit a shroud the boat luffs & somtimes tacks and blows over on you when you are getting back in ... this is one of the major benefits of una rig over a rig with stays. Just need s well designed mast,

Ric, you're absolutely right. Where I sail, we've generally got reasonable waves as soon as there's any wind. On the RS100 it's best to get in over the front of the wing, but if you're not quick, then because the boom is retricted by the shrouds it powers up and either goes head to wind and rolls in or tacks and rolls in. So far, I've been unsuceesful with dry capsizing on the 100. In some ways, from the videos, the D 1 looks more controllable that the 100, but that's probably just because they're better sailors than me! I must admit I like the Finn style rig on the D1 so long as it last and doesn't surrender to spinnaker loads over time. Answers to to capsize issues on 100; 1. Don't capsize 2. If you do - get in quick

Martin that is a surprise to me. Last Friday for example I sailed two 1 hour races and dry capsized the 100 at least 4 times. No other wet capsizes either. Perhaps I have just been lucky but it is only a light boat and can be righted reasonably easily I thought. Dave Edited by asterix |

On the last day of Torbole (25knots) I thankfully managed to stay dry for the racing, however between race one and two, don't ask me why but I capsized while waiting for the 5 minute gun. Over onto the board and being a bit dazed I brought it up too quickly and it came over on top of me because of the direction. So then I swam to the transom, got in fine. Just as I got myself sorted the 5min gun went and I was shattered! Anyhooo, usually over the wing for me, but transom works as well, is my point. Timg |

Getting back in the boat is a bit of a weight over fitness issue I've found.
Since we're discussing it. Getting back in the RS aint as easy as getting back in the Blaze or the Alto. Or is it winter unfit and portlyness? Well no, the RS is a light boat and even at my slender build (which admitedly has until recently been a tad on the obese for my size side)plus the bulk of those infernal buoyancy aids dingy world seems so stupidly obssessed by, tends to pull the hull over on top of me if I hang about at all, so I can totally see where TT is coming from going round the back. (Other than his natural approach anything female from the rear tendency). Any chance I get I dump the buoyancy aid much to the collective howls of derision and threats of being chucked out the race by the S.I. Nazis, but they really do hinder you when you're swimming. As it is I only use a crash vest from kitesurfing because it is low profile gives an impression of being a buoyancy vest without the bulk to fool the Nazis, but gives you a half decent chance of getting over the side and into the bottom of the boat before it falls over on the side you're getting in from. Maybe I should consider an approach from the rear in future.. |

I assume the 100 is like the 300 in that getting back into the boat after a capsize is a real difficulty if you're not already on the board - i.e. if you fall off the board as the boat's coming upright. When this has happened to me I've re-capsized the boat to give me time to haul myself back onto the board before the boat rights rather than be left dangling from the sidedecks, legs in water with the boat upright. If, however, you do find yourself in this situation there is a real difference between trying to haul yourself manfully back into the boat (almost impossible unless you're pretty fit and it's only your first capsize) and using your body weight to sink the windward sidedeck which allows you to flop back in more easily. Otherwise, head for the transom! |

umm stating the obvious but surely, capsize talk aside, mounting her from behind is the most civilised way to leave the beach unless your <chosen> lady happens to have a enclosed or difficult rear entry, in which case an undignified belly flop over from the side technique would have to be employed?
