That and a suggested 1005 which is the same as an RS300 although you have a socking great kite on top....how does that work then?

Tim,
I think of the 300 as more similar to moth and 100 more similar to laser in terms of hull wetted area. And I remember my old low rider moth was racing of 980 before I hacked it to bits and put foils on it. Another point to note about some of the good 100 handicap results achieved so far this season is that he boats are brand spanking new and are all in a condition that should mean they are as competitive as the can be (except hull number 123 of course). Therefore it will be interesting how the handicap fairs over a few seasons once the boats and rigs all age a bit. The other thing I have found with the hcp is it's obviously less effective in certain conditions. It will be interesting to see how returns look over the space of a full seasons conditions. Cheers, Keith |

I'm afraid it will get tagged as a bandit but not because
its unfair... just because when conditions suit it, its very fast... and when the dont (and you cant fly the kite) it isn't.... and as the PY is an average. I think over time it will probably drop by 10 points or so but that's not going to stop James winning on the good days! Ian |

I am really keen to see a direct comparison on a windward leeward with the 100 versus the D1 to compare the initial PY's. I actually thought some of the mags reviewing themmight hasve done this as we know the D1 is a good bit quicker round the course but is the difference comparible with the current initial PY difference? Has there been any meetings of 100's against D1's down south yet? Cheers, Keith.

Just pulling your leg James. Great result, and makes it all worthwhile! I guess a big rig 100 is similar in size/speed to a Phantom, but with a kite? When you look at the evidence, a kite makes about 30 points difference on average. So RS100 = Phantom - 30 seems about right to me. |

Keith, I'm not sure we do know that. The meetings both boats have met at are in such tiny numbers you don't know if its difference in sailor skill!! I also disgree about the boats all being fast because they are new! Sure if you compare a new 100 against a 5 year old one (obviously there are none) then you may see a 1% difference if that. I actually think the boat will be faster in 5 years because you boys wil lof learnt how to sail it properly by then. Much like the 300, you will know exatly which mast rake, kicker settings etc. work! |

Good point mr merlin.
I guess your right as we will all get quicker the more we understand about rig and stuff. My only point was that there's no tatty kit out there yet so I would expect to be quick myself even in a new design if the hcp is reasonably fair as everything is brand spanking. Cheers, Keith |

I sailed mine for the thrid time ever last weekend & on the sea ( rare ) & got humped by everything incluing lasers & on a windward / leeward course as well.Low wind speed of about 4 knots building to 10 Knots by the end of the race. Couldn`t point, couldn`t get the kite to pull ( not much wind & top pulley set to high ) So bandit? not for me! when the conditions suit the boats & the boat is better set up & I have more time in waves,Then, maybe, perphaps,if I am lucky. |

Hell you lot get on this forum early...! James I was going to say that it has been a long time since I saw the underside of a 300...and your post reminded me of what Haroosh has pointed out....I remember it being quite "mothy" underneath the flared wings. So that would explain it.... Timg |
