I've not sailed a Tasar, but I think their rotating mast set up is quite different to an NS style one. I've never had any problems with it anyway. |

Having sailed the Tasar a few times recently I have been reminded what a
pain that mast spanner is; I'd defo go with a carbon pole over a
rotating wing if I were you ...
Could be one of those surprises, or maybe not - we are already running trials with several different rig options anyway including a carbon 'stick'. Peaky is quite right as well ... the NS system is more efficient, much lighter, and simpler. The ICON rig developmnet is being run in paralllel with the hull work on a standard NS hull for now (but fitted with centreboard) .... the results of both programmes will be coupled up later Rick - Why not come along and see what you think in due course when we reach some firmer conclusions ? If time & location allowed I'd like a go but I doubt I'd buy unless there is a realistic prospect of fleet racing.

I think is more hassle with the new sails as the jib catches the diamonds on a gybe if the spanner is not centred. |

ahhhh ok that makes sense. We never had issues with the old sails, I have never sailed one with the new sails. I found the sliding stays more of a hassle TBH. Timg |

Frank B. has expressed the view that with the Tasar they spent a long time comparing wing mast profiles and did not look outwards to see what others were doing with simple "sticks". The wingmast performance route is one way to get power out of the rig, but it is more difficult to achieve an "automatic" rig situation (re. its absence on the 49er, 29er, 59er, int14, etc) as well as N12, and others. So I share Rick's opinion on this. There was a proposal for a Tasar II, which would have a more automatic rig, but this was turned down by the Tasar Class Association amongst fears that the class would then be split... Age old story...repeats itself...Ad nausiam Edited by Slippery Jim |

The overwhelming problem with the Tasar II was the proposal to drop the hull weight, which would instantly have destroyed the value of (at the time of the proposal) about 95% of the fleet and therefore destroyed the critical mass. Interestingly, Julian says that in slower boats (ie 470) a non-automatic rig is possibly faster. Interestingly, while a bunch of classes have followed the lighter hull/faster rig line that was proposed for the Tasar II, none of the proponents of the Tasar II and similar proposals have been able to give us an example where is has succeeded in a large SMOD class. I asked for an example of success several times during the Tasar II debate and never got one, but I was able to give several examples of classes that have upgraded in performance and promptly lost numbers. The class has gone the sensible route and is doing very well here.
