Has anyone tried getting an IRC rating for a 707 out of class. The recognised one design rating is starting to come down a bit now, but I wondered if anyone had had a weigh in? Would be interesting to see!!!

Jon, I've got a IRC cert for my 707 (GBR 7097N) which is the standard 2010 rating of 0.921. I considered having the boat weighed & measured for the start of this season but unfortunately didn't have the time to get it to the organised weigh in at Ardrosson on the Clyde. Given the limited amount of class racing here I am seriously considering taking the boat out of class perhaps for the latter part of this year. However, how far do you go... We've considered a few mods including: - Addition of a backstay - Increasing roach on the mainsail - Longer spinnaker pole and addition of an IRC friendly prodder - lightweight jib & larger kite (asymetric) - keel and rudder mods It would be possible to do some of these mods and still be able to return the boat to 'in-class' but how far do you go before a J80 (or similar) starts to look better value. Cheers, Craig

Thanks for that Craig, It'll be interesting to see what happens if you do get it weighed and measured, I'm sure it would come down a few points. I fancy a little fixed sprit for a code zero!!

Certainly the 707 doesn't rate on CYCA! Pity you don't have OD on the clyde : it is Bavaria vermin and Elans from what I hear recently with FTSE sailing her own wind and her own races! Monkey in Oban turned up at TWHW one year with his 707 modded: they took the pole off the sunken FC Europe and rigged a plate on the mast top to take a mast head assy' Dunno where they got the kite from: would IRC rate the whole J legnth or just the prodded part? I would have thought a smaller symmetrical would make it rate: The kite is pretty big and deep, and I reckon you could live with less Sq.m : better shape in the light and just hang onto the transom when it is blowing off Tarbert! On chaning boats: The ex Bene Platu 25 goes better than the J80 in light to medium usual clyde summer winds, and rates better on IRC than the 80 or the cork; although Elf never really set the IRC heather on fire.... |

Hmmm.....I owned a 707 for a few years in OD format, don't any more. The things you are suggesting might be fun but I don't think any of them would really improve IRC results. The kite, for example, is already huge by IRC norms and the pole over-long. I had an IRC rating for a few seasons and the 707 could do OK in IRC fully crewed. Absolutely hopeless 2-handed upwind though..... |

captured during burnham week this year, rates in at 0.900 irc, was very close on the day that it raced (commodores cup) being 6 mins off the pace after 4 hours, with the whole fleet finishing with 18 mins of each other results here http://burnhamweek.org.uk/result/2010-5-101-0/ ![]() |
