sorry to crash in the thread: but what weight range is the 100 suiting? I really like the videos I have seen of it: I am a former second row rugby player (blind side usually) How does it go in light airs with heavier sailors? |

When Mark Rushall (Y&Y) was sailing against the Lasers it was 12-14kts, he was too light (76kgs) for the 10.2 sail, and sailing against 2 guys from the Olympic development squad. (Rob Godwin and Mark Powell). Both these guys are on the big side and were flat hiked: As soon as it went lighter, Mark Rushall in the RS100 suddenly was faster and higher. Part of the design ethos was to crack the light air experience - it is a very long way from a "get sticky in the light" skiff type shape!

Last night at Gurnard, there were three RS100s sailing. For the first lap ~ 20 minutes in light wind ~ 5 - 8kts?, the first 100 was 2-3 mins ahead of the first laser. the second 100 about a minute clear, and the third one about the same as the laser and a 200.
The first RS with the small sail and 14 stone was fully hiked, and the laser wasn't fully powered. The wind then went silly, a big black cloud, and three different directions at once, I was hoping for a waterspout!. Sailing in a straight line on a broad reach, I saw a laser get gybed to the other reach, then moments later it was in irons head to wind. |

Thanks for the tips.
I am over 100kg, but it would be the first about here so not great odds. You look like you are having fun TTurtle! Bit ambitious with heigth though? The leech looks pretty tight on both sails Has the kite got sheeting angle control or twinning lines ? ( aka barber haulers) |

I was sailing a Laser and I have been sailing against Lasers over the past
couple of weeks. I would take the points that Nick makes at 90kg +, with the 8.4 upwind it is in a different league to a laser. On top of that, it is a heck of a lot nicer and more comfortable to sail. |

I read Mark Rushall's comments and have to say I was surprised by the
comparison to a Laser comment (otherwise an incredibly positive review). From my experience in sub 10 knots the 100 leaves a well sailed Laser for dead upwind. In 5-8 knots with the 10.2 I have found I can easily sail over even a well sailed Laser and pull out a comfy margin by the windward mark - put the kite up and they simply disappear in the rear view mirror ! Only time I struggled was in 12-15 knots when I was really fighting with the 10.2 and a well sailed Laser kept pretty close because I was overpowered and he was able to keep it nice and flat. Again never saw him again after the downwind. Sailed in a mixed medium handicap fleet (over 1000 PY so humiliating !) in Torbay couple of weekends ago. in a 4 to 6 knot breeze on very flat water with 10.2 found I easily sailed away from most of the fleet and after 15 minutes of beating rounded the windward mark first 50m ahead of a very well sailed Tasar (never done that before in light winds) and actually caught a 400 and 600 who had started 5 minutes before !. I was fully hiked a lot of the time and still sat up even in the lightest bits. The leading Laser, a very good sailor otherwise, was miles back sat inboard and really struggling in the light breeze. Breeze went totally pear shaped after that with 180deg windshifts so final results were erratic. |

The intention is that NOR and SI's for events will develop the 2 fleet structure: But obviously otherwise this fairly "open" approach allows sailors to be flexible for smaller events. EG Glyn Charles tomorrow, when Charlie, having looked at the forcast, is opting 10.2 - won't make any difference of course!!
