I've got the garmin 301 - its basically the same as the 201 but has USB and is far less prone to connection problems with the serial port on the 201...

Cheers for the feedback. I'm sure I've seen people with that Garmin one
before - looks bang on for what I'm after.

The other half is of to the states soon. Might see if I can get a cheap one
from over there.

I use ther garmin foretrex 201 & attach it to the boat on the bottom of the mast so you get true speed of the boat,It is only spashproof but has gaven me 3 years of good service & use it to see improvments in settings & true-ish real time speed.

has VMG,waypoints,Avg speed,tracking map,long-lat,As well as the other expected functions.

also has a countdown timer function if required

They'd not allowed Air rowing when GRF was a lad - come to think of it, they hadn't invented a GPS where you didn't need a room sized computer to set off the missiles - he must be talking about the next generation...

It will tell you your speed and location, draw a little sketch of where you've been and with a bit of fiddling will (I think) tell you your VMG toward a preprogrammed mark.

Alternatively,  I have an oldish PDA with a GPS in it that will plot my position in real time on an OS map.  Too big to wear on a wrist but small enough to go inside the boat.  You can then see where you've been and where you failed to tack on a shift etc etc.

You can probably get an "app" for an i or android phone too come to that.

I can't remember the model number but a lot of us windsurfers used a wrist
mounted Garmin. Looks like an overgrown watch, only splashproof really,
some of them wrapped them in mobile phone bags to increase the water
proofing, but mine never gave me any trouble..

Not really a beginner question, but there isn't a techy discussion area.

Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a wrist mounted GPS. I want to use it for
sailing and mountain biking. Its not class legal, but I fancy being a bit geeky
and downloading plots of my race route and seeing top speeds.

I want something small, wrist mounted, water proof (obviously!) and robust.

Has anyone got any positive experiences / recommendations?
