Yeh you could be right Chris. So far my cunningham has never really been on as I've not felt I needed it. Our Wednesday night racing starts this week so lots more chances to try new things. We always have a really good turn out of 200's aswell so it will be great to judge against them as my experience so far with them is not much in it up wind but then I can get away downhill. I am fortunate that we always have a windward leeward course for us asymetrics so not let had to do any silly tight reaches or anything. I know the kite would not be used as in any sort of breeze I am sailing really deep with it. Really interesting you are going for the 8,4 Chris given your height and weight. I am thinking the 8,4 is possibly going to end up the most popoular rig and even in moderate breezes I am really hiking hard upwind to try and keep the boat flat but I am only about 10.5 stone. Cheers, Keith.

I think the clever bit is the two stage tensioning of the kicker system during rigging up, and the use of splices to enable this. Not sure if it is so important on the 8.4 though?

Are but Graeme that is because you are a 'special customer' ! The rest of us just get a piece of string with a block on the end of it ! Have to say this is a highly effective mechanism (the entire vang assembly) and has a very significant effect as the primary sail control. Had a cracking sail last night on the Teign in a nice 10 to 12 knot east breeze (effectively the ideal windward/leeward direction) - was using a lot of kicker and a lot of cunningham and the boat felt very sweet upwind in that mode sailing slightly free. Aah. the light dawns.
I saw Nick fiddling with bits of string at the bottom of the mast, and he showed me how to adjust it for varying conditions, I remember thinking how crude, typical dinghy wallers but say nothing and humor them, then a nice young lass called Rosy Lea came along and it went straight out of my head. It works quite well if you remember to attach it all, hooking the loops over the metal bolt thing (if the nuts haven't come undone that is..) I want something like that to make the outhaul go in and out, I'm sure I keep putting to much tension on it, the sail looks so flat once I'm on the water even though it looks OK on the land. Maybe I'll take it off, that Gnav thing looks ok but I think the rear sheeting is actually what does any tensioning, all that Gnav does is leave the tension on when you sheet out, so why would you need to do that? As you can see, I haven't totally got my head round it all yet.. |

Well if the sheet was release and there was no kicker on the boom instead of going out would go straight up in the air. The sail would become very full and you would have more power than when you started. |

Was waiting for the first little moan to appear - next week it'll be "the boats OK but it needs better controls, a trapeze, some wings, different rig etc etce etc" - almost inevitable. |

I fear not. How many more like him are out there? Can opened, worms all over the battlefield, obscuring clear line of sight.
