Rule 42

Yes everyone stops pumping when the notice the jury boat in the vacinity and start again as soon as their attention moves on to someone else.

The one Worlds I went to gave the jury nice yellow ribs so they were easy to spot.

I have tried to protest for rule 42 a few years back, at a really top event, with on the water jury etc.  After the race you had to tell the jury about any protest that you planned to carry forwards, which i did, and he told me it was not a valid protest and that it would have to be done by him rather than another sailor. 

To be honest i didnt believe it at the time either but it is not the only time i have heard of this happening. 

This was a few years back and under the 2000-2004 rules i think.

Surely if the battens don't pop then you get no forward drive out of pumping anyway. The only opportunity to gain from it is on the singe occasion when they do finally pop, so I would think that there's not a problem in how mnay times it takes you to pop them.

A good alternative to pumping them across is to stand up and give the sail a good hard slap/push just in front of the point of maximum draft.

no need to retire, rule 42 cannot be protested by another sailor, it must be done by the PRO and his team.  Obviously there is a skill to popping battens but you are not breaking a rule in what you are doing. At least not until the PRO says so. 

The best thing though is to expect the battens not to pop and to include the pump in  the tack which is completely legal and you will never have a problem!
