Finally got a shot of me (all be it not great quality) in club racing yesterday. Very light winds again and albsolutely trucking downwind but so light that upwind was struggling to get rid of hook effect up the leech. Only way was to pull of loads of mainsheet to tension leech but it felt slower than easing the sheet although the sail looked nicer. Anyway she still sailed very nicely to handicap. Cheers, Keith. |

Mrs B has pointed out that we all need to get some pink gear to match the sail trim - has Keith already adopted this policy?

Hi Keith,
are you on little or big rig? How do they compare? I've only used little one so far, its very manageable, but wonder if biggie could give a bit more ooomph on light weather downwnd. |

That's the small rig, the big rig has a black wave on the bottom panel by the leech.

Alan, I am small rig as I'm only wee myself! I am just under 70kg's and 5'8" so I didn't even bother buying the big sail. I am finding even in light winds I am getting on fine with the small rig and having a seperate PY for it means it is still competitive. Just need to work out how to reduce the hook effect when its so light that the winds doesn't help. I hope to not be sailing in too many drifters anyway I suppose. Loved the pictures of your boat testing. You looked like you were enjoying it. Cheers, Keith

James, interesting you're sailing against RS300s like me. Was sailing against them and other boats yesterday in the 8.4. It was 3 short races, so small course. Found that the kite hoists and drops were costing me big time. Of course another assy downside is that often one of the two reaches is too tight. Anyway, I wonder what it would be like sailing the RS1 without kite. Take the shrouds off, put up the 10.2 and I wonder whether you could semi hold the RS3s. RS1 has great natural stability, but of course much more wetted area. Would be nice to have suggested PYs for both main sizes, especially for ppl climbing the sailing learning curve, then the RS1 could also be a Laser/ Phantom alternative. Nice RS100 site BTW, useful stuff on it.

Keith / Alan, I ordered the 8.4 from RS this morning. Have been using the 10.2 up till now but sailing in 10 to 12k over weekend, maybe gusting to 15 at most, made up my mind that in any sort of breeze I need to be on the smaller rig (im 6'1" and 13.75 st) - was really struggling to sail upwind with any sort of efficient glide despite having all controls on maximum. However in 5 to 10 knots the big sail is very nice indeed and a total weapon for a heavy sailor. To be honest i don't think you would get any advantage downwind with the bigger sail as the kite is doing most of the work - I'm actually looking forward to getting a bit more height on the offwind with the smaller sail (having to dump the main to make tight reaching legs). On the leech hook my initial reaction is that maybe the mainsheet tension is not helping this - have you tried bucket loads of kicker and cunningham to blade-off the top part of the sail and maybe a bit less mainsheet ? I will let you know how I get on with the 8.4 compared to the 10.2 once I have sailed it. Edited by ChrisC |
