We're planning a trip across the Bristol Channel as part of a Charity Baton Relay from St Kilda to Shoeburyness in Essex. Has anyone here ever sailed a cat across and have you any tips. We're going on the 19th May, High Water is 1130. Boat is an F18 and we have safety / video boat accompanying us. |

You should have no problem, only issue is they wont let you lock out of cardiff with your sails up!!! One of the guys from our club tried it in his Wayfarer (sailed from Thornbury, look it up on google!), anyway the harbourmaster didnt take to kindly to it and they had to be towed in by a passing yacht.
My ex int 14 helm has sailed his Laser 2000 from Thornbury to Flatholm (just off of Cardiff) for a weekend with crew along with another couple of guys who took a Buzz, my father-in-law joined them singlehanded on his Dart 15! Ok we are further up the channel but regularly sail from across to Chepstow YC in dinghies, in fact Nigel Lovett has taken his A-class across for our club picnic on several occasions. So should be an absolute doddle. Its only about 4 miles across from Cardiff and if you need to quickly get to the shore you have flatholm and steepholm to aim for. Edited by craiggo |

What are you guys talking about. Hitch up the trailer get onto the M4, go across the bridge, keep on the M4 until J13, take the A34 south, then the M3 followed by the M27 leaving at J8 (I think). Weston is just past Netley, watch out the entrance is surrounded by trees!

Craiggo, thank for the info, at a push I guess we could get the main up from onboard but it's not easy. I am a bit concerned should we have to get out with any sort of wind behind us....reversing through with a rib each end (tug fashion)could be an option. I'll have a chat with the Harbour master before we go and beg his permission. Contender443, oh yes that Weston, we were thinking more of the one with Super Mare after it |

That sounds like a great idea - I keep staring at Cardiff from WSM beach thinking it would be nice to pop over for lunch on the Moth...

One option would be to launch off of the beach at Penarth next to the pier. Cant remember seeing a ramp on the promenade when I last went into Cardiff or stopped for lunch off of Penarth but it would be an option.

Cardiff Yacht Club have kindly offered that we can launch there so we'll have a blast around the bay first, if we have to drop the main it can be done from on board at a push. I'm looking forward to it.

On your way back home why not pull into Mumbles as it is the Gower Challenge on the 22-23 May.
Also, F18's and Windsurfers have made the trip from Mumbles to Ilfracombe so Cardiff to Weston should be a peace of cake as long as there is enough wind to beat the tide! Good luck |

Hi Mark, we might just do that. Always enjoyed Mumbles, helm being a Swansea boy, I'll check if I've got enough brownie points. We've got Bala coming up and Tresaith open at the end of the month.
