Tim - First test with these newer sails today, the ones from the Dinghy Show but with the jib already slightly recut in the last few days - so you are seeing it all 'as was' in the first 20 minutes - not glossy marketing photos. Sheeting setup was refined from these particular photos later and we will shortly decide on whether to fit barber outhauls as well. First unprompted reaction off the water from Toby (North One Design) was that it was the first 2-sail boat ever he would have to seriously consider for himself after sailing it.
For a first go the current set are remarkably good and I do not think we will need anywhere as many itterations as for Blaze or Halo. A few glitches are to be expected but we are pleased. A few deck and rig and other changes are also planned but in general so far so good ... and lots more water time planned in the next few weeks. Mike L. |

I don't normally get involved in these discussions but thought on this occasion I'd add a couple of comments as I was out in the Icon today... For a first sail and considering the boat is still very much in prototype form and it was very light airs, the performance is very impressive! Testing was not too detailed today, we were mainly looking at general shape, fit and finishing details. As Mike has already said there will be a number of changes made to the boat in the near future. Once these are done we are looking forward to getting some more intensive and detailed testing done. Sailing the Icon is definitely a perk of my job! |

It will be interesting to see how it performs in some strong winds upwind. I have been sailing NSs here in Sydney since 1996, and I can tell you over 12 kts we are fully hiked with 145kg on board up wind. It is a pity that you guys have decided to go with a bigger sail area than the NS, now the boats are no longer comparable. Also the hull design chosen for the Icon was never popular here, and was considered by many to have an old fashion style deck layout. Many of the newer hull designs here look so much better than the Flight 24 design. By the way the Icon/Flight 24 hull was designed by Vic Hammond, one of the pioneers of the NS class, Vic is an 'icon' of the NS class here in OZ. |

Russell please post some photos on here of some of the different deck layouts, as i thought the icon looked quite smooth!? Remember our average wind speed inland her in the UK is probably allot less then you guys have back in AUS, therefore more sail area maybe needed? |

.... as we have said already the (Flight) hull is/was simply the starting point. Vic did a great job but was always working within the NS rules of course .... we are not seeking to introduce the NS here as the development 2-sail class 'slot' is already filled in the UK very well by the N12.
The NS will remain a very important influence but we are not restricted by its rules. Although the obvious change today is to the rig there are a series of other changes in progress that will ultimately change both deck and hull form. Some of these will be very minor and to do with Icons appearence but some are more radical - but the 'base' is a great starting point. As said there are a variety of NS layouts and alternatives but there are also many good ideas from other classes that will also influence the final offering. And yes we do want it to be fully capable of carrying a bit of weight across the wind range ! Mike L. |
