Not surprised that the boat is barking dog slow when heeled. Look the chines and all that wing churning up the water! I'm surprised you didn't get turned hard a port and thrown. Can't have been that fast then. Arf Arf Arf Arf Edited by Slippery Jim |

"What I found with the mainsail was that it really responded to kicker adjustment Thanks for the feedback James, you've more or less confirmed what I experienced in the prototypes although I never got the big rig de-powered enough to feel comfortable with. At 78kg I think the times I would use the big sail would be very limited indeed, needless to say I'm going for the 8.4, which I have to say, for me, made the boat feel a lot more "balanced". I think the analogy with the 300 boys and the 600 sailors taming their big rigs could lead some of the lighter guys to think they might do the same in the 100, some might, but when they get to the top mark the 300 /600 boys haven't got another 12.5 of sail to handle, bearaways, hoists and gybes in any breeze may have those guys wishing they'd be a little more conservative on their initial mainsail size choice. Your feedback is welcome and as you have somehow managed to blag the first boat you are now the fountain of all knowledge, and possibly the man to beat at the nats |

James,
Blimey all this discussion about sail size has now got me quite concerned ! Im not that heavy (85kg) but had assumed without any hesitation that the big rig was the one for me - all the present comment is now making me concerned about this choice ! Most dinghys I have sailed feel underpowered and I have usually found it very frustrating watching Phantoms pulling away in the light to medium whilst i am sitting dead-in-the-water. Most of my sailing in the 100 is going to be in the force 1 to 3 range - got trapeze boats for recreational sailing when the breeze is up. I am also aware that it is a very sad fact that most dinghy races in the UK take place in a F2 !!! How does the 10.2 feel compared to a Phantom ? Maybe I need both rigs and then decide ? |

Hi James,
Really appreciate that useful insight, which sort of confirms why I have chosen the big rig - for the very same reasons as yourself ! Although I live on the coast I am primarily going to be sailing my 100 on a tidal river estuary for summer evening club racing, which is most usually exactly as you describe - patchy wind, fading evening breeze, nip-and-tuck type sailing where generally I get mullered by Phantoms and Solos. For sailing on the sea at weekends (currently in a 49er and Vortex Assymetric) I will either stick to the trapeze boats or get the smaller main. Have not actually ever sailed a hiking boat yet, but it had dawned on me that slogging upwind from Torquay to Brixham in a hiking boat probably not going to be such an easy ride as in the Vortex or 49er !!! Going to stick with the big rig but maybe get an 8.4 for more all-round. Really what i am hoping for in the 100 is Phantom type light to medium performance upwind and some fun (and no kneeling !!) downwind. Edited by ChrisC |

James - not quite as pretentious as it sounds. Summer evening sailing on the river is just my best chance to get on the water and thus i want to make the most of it. Spent the last 2 years basically 24/7 doing DIY (and going to work !) with not much sailing. Might try and sneak a day up at South Cerney once I pick up my boat - looks similar sort of conditions to what we get on the River Teign - but you dont get 6 hours on mud at low tide ! |

Just to add my 2p's worth to the 'which rig' discussion,
I tried both sizes last November in winds ranging from F2 to F5, and being 6ft, 81Kgs 'bare weight!' I am definitely opting for the small rig. This went away from my initial 'well it's got to be the big rig hasn't it?' thought but it does seem in the RS100 case that the big rig is meant for bigger people (no offence to anyone!). All I need now is a boat! Cheers, Phil |
