You mean the Doggies Bollockies? There's only one boat that's that... Hopefully not too much of a dog... Edited by Slippery Jim |

Mike, What size are those sails? Is that Technora Black (would look nice on black spars!)? They look very nice - so little luff curve! |

A Merlin was tried with a wing mast (Not sure it was over rotating) 3490 Wing and a Prayer. From what I recall his buggest problem was depowering the extra sail area in the mast. I think this was about the late 80's early 90's. I think the wing mast was only on the boat for a couple of seasons, before going back to a traditional rig. Now that technology has moved on, maybe, it would be time to re-visit this avenue.... |

De-powering traditionally was a problem, but people like C-tech can now make wing masts with flexible tips, and when you combine that with a fat-top sail, you should have no problems. Remember, it doesn't have to be a wing shape all the way up. You can put a round-section tip on it to give you venting. You either get the wing to blend into a round at the top of the main section, or just to sleeve it such that it lines up at the back for the track. Edited by Skiffybob |

I seem to remember it was a cut down Dart mast. |

I still would be interested what some extra hull length instead of wing masts or cruziform rudders would buy you in order to get a little bit away from the n12 crew weight range. Even if that would take you closer to an 59er without kite again... Maybe that idea was not bad at all

But a 59er without a kite is like an RS800 without a kite... Just don´t go there... ![]() It´s like having ripe cherries without er... plucking them (if you know the old rhyme ![]() |

Does amaze me how folk can put on something like that, which was, what, about the state of the art thirty years before, and a config that had *never* worked well on a dinghy even back then, and then be suprised if it doesn't work very well. For anyone paying any attention at all it was clear that stiff pear section wing masts didn't work signifucantly on dinghies from at least 1976, but there were other sections that did hold promise. |
