Im looking to buy a dehumidifier to dry the boat out quicker which can stay damp for a long time- and also to help dry the boat out when on its trailer.

Not knowing anything about them- what should I look for? What kind of £ are we talking about?

One thing I do want is not an internal tank for the water taken in because I want to leave it on without filling up.

Any advice much appreciated.

Go down to B & Q and buy the cheapest one you can find.....they die after a couple of years if asked to dehum the salty environments!

Most are supplied with drain to tank or hose options

I bought this one: Zennox Compact Dehumidifier

Its been nothing but brilliant, and is very effective. Cost £30.....

We have a dehumidifier at home. They work fine enclosed, ie in a room, but sounds like you want to do it outside/in a garage. Best bet is to buy one and see if it works for you then let others know if so.

Another idea is just to get the heaters on in the garage.

...just remember the whole thing about dew point....

They work fine above an ambient 12'c but thereafter they start to get a bit inefficient and lower down in the winter freeze up.

A cheap one with a good thermostatic heater will dry out a boat quite nicely and quickly  in the winter. Thereafter if you keep the boat sealed up, the bilge dry and a cover or indoors then it will come out maybe a mild winter day and weekend in the spring near season start.

They have a frost protection thing built in which cuts in if it gets too cold. Saves it freezing up.

I bought a "new kind of" de-humidifier which doesn't use refrigerant but a dessicant disk instead.  Works right down to a few degrees C.

Supposed to be good for garages and boat sheds.

Ours is in the house and has been happily extracting many litres since its arrival.  Quiter than the old type too.

Luckily, my (GRP) boat doesn't mind being wet!

The house on the other hand, being full of damp sailing kit and sails ......
