We are planning to hold a one day open meeting for a small singlehanded fleet later this year on a small inland water.

What do Clubs normally charge as an entry for such events? The only overheads to speak of will be some prizes.

No more than £10. Most small venues are about £7.50 to £10, you still get the odd one thats £5 but they are few and far between.

Safety boats? Do you include a ticket for a social event with it?

Depending how much you want to spend on prizes, I'd say £12 to £15 would be OK.

We have similar conversations every year in our sailing club, especially when organising 2-day events. Events are good for the club's name, it's great to see visitors and all but, after all, you want to make a profit out of it!

I'd say no more than £7-8 or maybe a tenner with lunch included

Take a look at the class website and see what other clubs are charging the class for events, and liaise with the CA about what they expect for prizes etc...

We charge about £5, it's so hard to get visitors to come over so you don't want to put them off with an entry fee.

Oh.

That doesn't sound like a lot of money. £5? They'd spend more than that
on beer and breakfast surely?

We have plans for hosting an event this upcoming season, we've got an
enthusiastic bunch of new sailors and they want to have an event, but at
that rate, surely it can't be financially viable. Don't you need I rescue boat
for every five competitors or something like that.

Don't the officials need out of pocket expenses?

I dunno, I guess I shall have to find out, it's been a long time since I was
involved in organising stuff, but I'm sure even back that long ago entry
fees were minimum 12-15 quid.

When I did the Laser Circuit, the more expensive clubs were the ones run for profit and not for its members, I am sure if you looked on the Thames Valley Laser events, you will see which are which.

Prices ranged from £5 to £15, the better events were sometime the cheaper ones.

We did get lunch included in some of the entry fees too, that makes it worth attending.

There shouldn't be any more expense to a normal weekend of club racing?  Safety boats would normally be out and all our race officials would be club members so are volunteers.  So really any visitor boats fees would cover the prizes and some of the fuel.

I think if you get 30 boats all of whom have breakfast, cups of tea, lunch and a pint you'll make more money than you will if you charge double the entry fee and get 15 boats.

Some clubs and class associations won't have it but entry fees do put people off, regardless of how much more they spend on fuel and digs.

I usually reckon on about £10 for a one day event or £15 to £20 for a two day open. If a weekend for a normal open (not an inlands) is going to cost more than £100 all in (Fuel, digs, food etc) I think very carefully as to whether I will go.
