It starts life as an epoxy, which is then esterified, so it isn't an epoxy anymore. This doesn't help as you often see the word epoxy mentioned (like what I did above) because of this early involvement of epoxy in the process.

So why can't we discuss how it stacka up to other alternatives? I imagine the performance difference between most Fords and most Ferraris is rather larger than the D1 and the RS100. |

New recommended PY for D-One! As some of you will know that we started with a recommended PY of 950 - we always knew that this would be hard to sail to but the last thing we wanted was to be guilty of banditry. We now have much more information as a result of input from the D-Ones out there in handicap racing and through careful analysis of results we are revising the recommended PY to 971 from 1st January. This looks about right on a variety of courses, wind and sea conditions. We will continue to analise results over 2010 and will report how it's going on a regular basis. Rodney |

From FBs Higher Performance Sailing: "A glass polyester boat will last a year, a vinylester kevlar boat will last two years and a carbon epoxy boat will last several years." Also with relation to the properties of porosity and micro-cracking modulus etc "The vinylesters have properties somewhere between the epoxies and the polyesters". |

Yeah. If I were buying a Ferrari, the salesman would be unapologetic about the price. You want a Ferrari sir, you pay the price. But then, with a Ferrari you are paying a hell of a lot of money for the badge and the status that (supposedly) goes with it, and it looks sexy too. Ie, you're buying more than just a collection of components bolted together so that they go fast. So the price question can only be answered if you have a criteria in your head of what you think you're buying. Is it speed, build quality resulting in longevity, build quality resulting in pride of ownership, build quality resulting in a better sailing experience, better competition, better depreciation etc etc. As we all have different ideas as to what criteria we consider important, I suspect that the only person who can judge the value for money of a D1 (or anything else) is the individual concerned. |

TT, in your excitement you may be getting confused between the resin and the fibre when talking about epoxy hulls and carbon hulls.

James; I think you are trying to make simple comparisons that are unfortunatly meaningless. I have no idea about the detailed specification of the MPS build; I dont know what grade/type of resin, foams, gel coats, tiecoats, glass & carbon Ovi's are using and I certainly don't know the details of the laminate lay up and then you combine that with the skill of the laminator and you get a boat ... so say two boats are similar in construction because they are glass & epoxy isn't useful; you need the details. |
