I've always had a soft spot for them (probably having spent a whole Winter going back to wood, top and bottom on one) and certainly looks interesting times ahead for the GP14.
http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=149837 Winder hull, laminate sails in the offing - sounds great. But starting £9K - phew! I expect a gorgeous Duffin 2 , like those that I used to slaver over, might even be a bit steeper. Another reason to head to the Dinghy show in March. |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Today I discovered that the GP in our graveyard (boat, not medical practitioner) is number 262, which must date it from the fifties? It still has the original cotton spinnaker. Unfortunately it is destined for the bonfire unless someone steps up to save it.
I would, but a) I have too many boats already b) it's not my type of boat ![]() |

What state's it in and why haven't you put it on the cvrda forum? Surely someone wants it?

The trouble is that there are loads of old GP's. They turn up at our club get sailed once or twice by Dad and two bored kids break, and get abandoned. We have three in the nettles at the moment all with wooden masts and bronze fittings. Are they classics? Plywood, hard (very) chine, not like an old Rocket or twelve..........

9k does seem an awful lot of money for something that was designed to be cheap and popular.

Er Why?
People it's 2010 next year. Ten years in to a new century. I mean GP14ers at the best of times were generally to be found in those wooden caravans. The sort of folk you wouldn't sell land to near your village. There is so much just wrong in dinghy world.. |

If people are willing to spend 9 grand on a new one, then it must be because of the great racing circuit. Can't say I'm a fan of the GP particularly, but then I sail a slightly smaller very old design, for the same reasons, so I can see the appeal. Also, they have a lifting rudder and centreboard, can be sailed in all weathers and off shingle beaches. Maybe you should try one?! |
