unmeasureable! hard to understand the concept of an actual area that can't be measured |

Just heard the club i sail at over the winter has dropped the Phantom Py to 1020!! Gives me more of a chance, although the boys that sail the Phantoms here aren't bad!!

This is why the subject of changing PYs is always a thorny one and it is difficult to do without inadvertantly upsetting someone. Luckily people where I sail are quite candid about their relative abilities and we do have a culture where people are more than willing to allow other club members to 'have a go' which can help indicate the relative performance. For example, I borrowed a Phantom a couple of time over the last year (admittedly in light airs) and beat the fleet by a good margin (except the guy who wins everything, he was not there). Drop me back in a standard laser and i would not stand a chance against them. Get me in an 8.1 and thing get interesting! It is all subjective, if you can agree on benchmark sailors for each class and agree they have a similar level of ability you can then make a more informed decision. From the looks of all the playing with PYs for the aforemented class there may be a considerable change...then again there may not! Time will tell. Until then just enjoy the sailing. |

Has anyone had a look at the American system? Different PYs for different wind strengths. Some boats (Laser, Albacore etc) are international enough for us to import those boats that are common to the US and UK and then guesstimate others using the Uk yardsticks as a starting point. Far too complex for the average club OOD,but may be worth an experiment at a major handicap event. Presumably wind strength would be the mean during the time of the race (first boat plus last boat divided by 2?), measured every 5/10/15 minutes by the nearest wind indicator? |

Is the wind indicator under the trees on the far side of the lake, up in the start hut which is relatively open, measuring the puffs that come across the lake, or any of the other hundred or so variables each and every club must have? And the Bloody Mary is a pursuit, so it could be tricky there. The Yardstick system would seem to have enough randomness about it without introducing yet another layer to argue about. Every duck has its day, so over a long race series things will balance out, maybe. Though usually it will be the talented people who win, whatever the boat or the weather.

I'm not sure of how many other classes entered but the results make interesting reading. Grafham Grand Prix results: Single Handers Handicap |

Its hardly anything meaningful, apart from the Challengers, which Grafham web site put in the same set of results, there were a couple of Finns, a Solo, Laser Radial and a few Blaze, the rest were Phantoms. (apart from those that didnt start/finish a race.)

I think the only meaningful thing that it demonstrates is that those who don't have Phantoms could not be arsed to turn up as they know they are on a hiding to nothing. Go and check out Nick Craig's results sailing handicap in OK, Finn and Phantom and work out which handicap might be the easiest one to sail to... Actually the RYA should be doing this, not you!
