Yes, windsurfing is certainly part of sailing. Earlier it was called boardSAILING, after all - Windsurfer was just a trademark that caught on because it was catchy, and "windsurfing" came from that. The first Windsurfer was designed to be a  better beach sailing craft than the Sunfish dinghy - from the start it was another form of SAILING.

The 1996 windsurfing gold medallist got bronze in 2004 in Tornadoes. I don't think you could come from another sport and get an Olympic medal in 4 years!

I'm not sure how much windsurfing you do, but I do know that there is an enormous amount of guys who sail both boats and boards (and they have won worlds in classes from Moth to Contender to 505 to F18 to Tornado and many others) and knowing many of them pretty welll I'm sure they feel that they are merely different parts of the same sport.

Windsurfing is the definatly the ultimate sport.

 It gets everything buzzing and you learn so much over the shifts and the speed is amazing! It even more interesting to watch. Even boats now are becoming more windsurf' like, For example the Foiling moths - The hull only just can keep the sailor floating, cammed sails, etc... just like windsurfing. Windsurfers fitted foils on the boards before boats and the foils actually made them slower that just shows how extreme windsurfing is.

It is bad news that the cats have been dropped just i think it was a good choice seeing what they had to choose over.

Windsurfing is a great sport, but not the ultimate at the olympics.  The 'air rowing' that everyone talks about is an extreemly poor representation of this dynamic sport.
