Are you Bob or Thomas?  I'm easily confused!

Anyhow, at least I now know who to badger for info.  Too bad you can't make it.

I take it Ashby is favourite?

I am Tom, Bob is US Class President.  I am just a lowly worker bee spreading the A-Cat gospel around.

It may (or may not) be quick, but that LR2 is one ugly duck.  The wing, on the other hand, is beautiful - although I'd be suprised if it proved quicker than a normal sail.

If they were not quicker, why would the C class use them?

The wings got potential, but its unlikely tp be perfect on the first attempt.  Also, of course, C Class cats race in very clean wind.  In contrast, there will be 100 boats at the A Class worlds.

If Ben has gotten the hang of sailing his wing, he will be a contender.

Here is the list of favorites and their platform, sail choice.

Glenn Ashby, Geltek Flyer MKII, Ashby Main, fiberfoam Mast

Lars Guck, Custom Morreli-Melvin/Nacra A3, Glaser Main, Fiberfoam Mast

Pete Melvin, Morreli-Melvin/Nacra A3, Glaser Main, Hall Spar

Pease Glaser, Morreli-Melvin/Nacra A3, Glaser Main, Hall Spar

Ben Hall, Peter Cogan designed Nikita, Hall Rigid Wing

Ian Lindahl, Lindahl-Roake LR2, Hall Spar, Glaser Main

Interesting Additions to the Event:

Randy Smyth, Lindahl-Roake LR2, Smyth Main, Hall Spar

Howie Halmin, Morreli-Melvin A3, Hall Spar, Glaser Main

Scot Anderson, Geltek Flyer MKII, Fiberfoam Mast, Ashby Main

Charlie Ogletree, (Current Olympic Representative Tornado Glass) Bimare XJ???, Ullman Main, Mast???

Cam Lewis-???

Mitch Booth-???

Pieter Saarberg- ?, Saarberg mast

(Below is a copy of a letter to the usaca about promotion and the entry list)

The list of the approved entrants to the 2007 A-class WC is really impressive, no doubt the best ever with four past A class Champion (Glenn Ashby, Scott Anderson, Pete Melvin and Mitch Booth, who comes back to sail a major A class event after 13 years), six Olympic medalists (Randy Smyth, Jay and Pease Glaser, Charlie Ogletree, Andrew Landenberger and Goran Marstrom), a world known maxi-multihull skipper (Cam Lewis), a 18’ skiff WC (Howie Hamlin), the current DN WC (Matt Struble), a prominent yacht designer (Mike Drummond) etc. Very seldom a sailing event has gathered such a various and qualified attendance.

Equally impressive is the boats’ roster which includes the first ever A- cat fitted with a wing sail, (according to me Ben Hall’s project is worth at least the same deal of attention paid to Rohan Veal’s flyng Moth), the radical platform designed by Richard Roake for Ian and John Lindhal, (I read rumours about a new type of mainsail to be tailored for it by Randy Smyth), the evolutionary boat developed by Peter Cogan, the new Swedish state-of-the-art wonder (the Marstrom M5) together with the more or less old Flyer Mk2, Bimare/VMI XJ, Tools etc.

I do think

that we all need to cooperate to make all this stuff known to the general sailing public, granting this regatta and the A-class the media coverage it deserves.

This is especially important in the present time when catamarans are in danger to be banned from the Olympic games by ISAF.

Therefore I recommend USACA executives/members and regatta’s organizers to contact ASAP the most important online and paper sailing magazines to have as many articles published as possible PRIOR, DURING and AFTER the event.

From my long experience , - I would like to make clear that I am not a professional reporter, but only an aged multihull enthusiast, (my first article - on the 1982 A class Worlds was printed on Multihulls Magazine and more recently I took care of the advertising/promotional work for the last three editions of the Little America’s Cup) -, many editors are keen to publish good stuff regarding catamaran sailings (just to name a few James Boyd of TheDailysail.com, who started as UK correspondent of Charles Chiodi’s Multihulls Magazine, the same Charles Chiodi, the guys at Yachts and Yachting, also on their line edition, Jean-Christophe Guillaumin of Multicoques/Multihulls-World etc. On the other hand I had no success with Sailing World and Seahorse (but Scuttlebutt.com was kind to host quite a few reports).

I bet that many of you have good relationship with many editors at Sailing World and for sure Halls Spars is well introduced with Seahorse.

A provisional plan could be prepare 2-3 article before the event:

one dedicated to Ben’s winged wonder with photos and a detailed explanation (by Ben) and the other one or two dedicated to the competitors with short interviews to the top guns (editors like interviews).

During the event it is PIVOTAL that a DAILY report is TIMELY mailed to all the on-line magazines with beautiful photos.

At the end all what it is needed will be to send the whole material to the redactions of the printed magazines.

Sorry for this

long and unsolicited message, but my aim is only to help the A-class (and all the catamaran classes) growth

Maurizio
