I also have an ali mast. It seems to fit the sail, so I guess doesn't need changing. Do you want to change for speed, or becuase the Ali mast is dead? If speed, are the modern masts actually faster?

As a new composite mast is touching £500.....i'd either speak to Claridges to see if he could just offer a top section - though it may well depend on the mast you currently have - or stick with what you have. I have access to 2 Lightnings now, one with the old one piece Needlespar rig & one with the carbon top rig. The new sail is the same on both rigs but, i guess, the carbon top twists off a bit more? |

What was the breakdown of Mylar V's Dacron at the Nationals? That should give you some idea of which to go for?

i think most of the sailers at the pointy end of the fleet used mylar
i know they are better because they keep their shape, but because of this the sail is more dificult to ' read' when the wind changes. a friend of mine has a laminate lightning sail on order, so i am going wait a while before i decide, and see how he goes with it.. Edited by ex laser |

I'd certainly agree about reading Mylar sails. If you are sailing on a light and shifty patch of water, such as a river or small pond, go for Dacron. I'll await your views with interest, as come winter, I might be looking too.

Hi. I am an ex Streaker sailor looking for a very good Lightning 368. I know that old ones are still good ones so age is unimportant but condition is. I live in Leicestershire and would be prepared to travel and I have a good budget for a Lightning. Does anyone of any very good boats that are available either nationally or their local club? - i've exhausted the usual outlets such as apolloduck, boats and outboards, dinghyshop, dinghy magazine and y&y! Also are there any particular weaknesses to look out for when I buy or sail one? Thanks |

You could try talking to John Claridge, he did tell me he was thinking about buying some of the second hand Lightning's around and re-fitting them.
You might also try asking the question on the other Lightning forum at:- http://www.voy.com/220832/ Good Luck LN172 |

Well, Haversham SC near Milton Keynes may not be big, and we may have not had any wind, but they got 3 races in, and more to the point, breakfast, cooked lunch and tea, all in the modest entry fee! Thanks Haversham for a really good day out. And it turns out that Lightning sailors are a lovely bunch of people, too! |
