If all goes to plan, 16 year old Mike Perham will cross the startline (Lizard-Ushant) this morning in his Open 50 to start a RTW voyage as the youngest person ever to attempt the solo, unsupported circumnavigation.  Wow! But it is difficult not to have mixed feelings about this.  The story at Cowes online  http://www.cowes.co.uk/zonexml/story?story_id=5515;cp=0 is the only thing I have read that looks at both sides of the picture.  I'd be interested to hear what other sailing/yachting folk feel about it.

Who would let their son do it?

He wont make it round in that thing.

I think it is fantastic. This kid is actually pushing for something worth
achieving, something so rarely ever done.
True enough, he could lead a safe life and at the end have little of a story to
tell. Or he can one day tell his grandkids of how he sailed around the world
on his own when he was just 16 years old.

And now after some problems requiring a stopover, it's going to be 'round the world' from Portugal to Portugal.

Or he could die. Or he could cause the deaths of people who attempt to rescue him.

Why is it worth achieving? Which 3rd parties benefit from it?

I support 'climbing mountains because they are there,' but don't try to justify it with any reasons other than those.

True, I see your point and I think almost all would agree with you. I
however may have a somewhat perverse and possibly cold hearted view
on life.
Their are 6 billion people in the world and most want to do the "life plan"
where by you grow up, get a girlfriend, get a job, get a house, get
married and have a kid and people are happy doing that, I myself was
born thanks to that very life plan.

BUT you don't need EVERYONE leading that life to keep the species going
so why not put your life on the line for something fantastic??

Why not do something so few dare to?

And who benefits? People can be inspired. Some other 16 year kid,
feeling down with low self esteem believing there isn't much out there
suddenly realizes that you really are allowed to push and strive for
something greater no matter how ridiculous or dangerous it might be.
Even if something bad happened to him, bloody hell he still went for it,
and that is plenty inspiring enough.
I think so few people feel genuinely inspired anymore.

I now await mass abuse from people telling me how much of a terrible
person I am.

Doug, you are right.

In the current climate of doom and gloom this country has nothing that is inspiring it. Hopefully Mike will succeed, I hope he does.

I can hold my hands up and say I watched in awe as Ellen crossed the finish line. I can also say that based on her success it made me want to go out and do something I meant to do and was able to do. That been getting into the sport of Sailing. Ok Ellen is a few years older than me (actually more than a few!) but the point been if Mike succeeds, then those kids in school who think that life is boring only have to see what he has achieved and then set themselves their own goals.

Well he's done it! There's a small article on the Y@Y website front page to
which I've added a response to yet another person with nothing but
cynicism.

As far as I'm concerned, he's pushed himself well outside of the comfort
zone of most people on the earth and he achieved what set out to do. Ok
there were a lot of stops but he didn't give up!

Well done Mike!!

Well done to Mike, although he had to stop to do repairs, it is a big success for someone who is not even old enough to drink.

Wondering what Mike will do next, to top being the youngest solo circumnavigator?

He's ditched the boat and had flying lessons instead. After 3 lessons he's made a plan to fly round the world non-stop!
