A friend recently bought a trailer on ebay and with it
came a free boat, however, they are not sure what the
boat is and nobody has yet been able to suggest what it
may be.

As shown in the pictures* it has a very distinctive
sloping transom, two positions for stepping a mast as
well as a self bailer.

Any ideas what this might be?

*The photos are down there in someone else's post
somewhere because i made a mess of uploading them

Where are your pictures stored?

if you view picture online copy the web address inside two img codes

so

If not on a website, reduce to 200k and use the piucture upload tool, the tree and arrow icon.

It is a Shadow. Should have an unstayed masthead rig, with a sail which is mainly sleeved onto the mast, but has a halyard, and a couple of feet unsleeved at each end just to ensure that it sets really, really badly. There is one at out club, but I'm afraid I can't help with designer or dates off the top of my head.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the mast that came with it seems to have a track for a boltrope and shrouds/forestay, just visible in the photo below (bottom right) is one of the loops the shrouds attach to:

Yes, that's a Shadow. My dad bought one (used, but not much)for very little cash in about 1982(?), so I suspect it is a pretty defunct class. Looked like something that was sold to beginners/non racers a bit like the Skipper. I don't think it had a PY number. It went quite well, in a sunny day pottering kind of mode. I never worked out the point of the sloping transom unless it was the designer's way of saying 'you're not putting an outboard on my boat!'.
