Lots of people helped...but to be honest it was still bloody hard work especially given the fact that we had F5-F6 SE all week (not what you want there).

Can't fault the club though, just the ramp to the boat park!

I guess that inland venues aren't regarded that highly (for championships)?

Partly tradition, partly the likelihood of sea breeze in the summer makes the wind more reliable on the coast, plus of course the family factor.

The Canoes do some inland Champs, they've done Ullswater and Loch Lomond in recent years, both of which of course are holiday destinations in their own right as well as sailing Locations.

There are a few classes which very much at their best on Inland waters which always hold their Champs there - for instance you'd hardly want to inflict a nasty Solent wind against tide slop on 90 year old Thames Raters!

British Moth for another, I don;t think they have any sea events (although I could be wrong).

Comets alternate between Sea and Inland I believe so insland sailors are not disadvataged because the setup and technque is different for inland (generally flat) water is different to that in waves. IMO it is much easier to go from waves to flat water than from flat water to waves.

No offence but a week at Grafham.......

Indeed - the fireflys are returning to hamble river in a couple of weeks time, which whilst handy for the large number of new(ish) parents in the fleet that live in/around soton, it's no so great for those that want to bring their kids and treat them to a bucket n spade holiday.

For some people who have frequent the K&Q in their youth, then 'it's not like we're going on holiday is it?' - indeed I'm lead to believe the reigning champ isn't defending their trophy for that very reason.

i was really inpressed by sunderland last year. Stunning sailing, sheltered launching and friendly club. Other favourite venues are abersoch and pwllheli because they are close, great sailing venues and have plenty of space. Dont like weymouth as its too business orientated. There is no character or friendliness to the place.

Can a poll be set up with this many options?

Landlocked in Africa
RS300 - 410
Firefly F517 - Nutshell
Micro Magic RC yacht - Eclipse

I'd go for for Falmouth, I never fail to be impressed by the place, both Carrick roads and open sea.

Teignmouth was good as well. But I havent been everywhere yet, so I look foward to visiting the other places named here.

Internationally I'd say Medemblik has everything.

I find Hayling frustrating in a number of ways. For all of it facilities I alway feel as if im in a sausage factory.

Except tide! It also has weird waves owing to being on a vast yet relatively shallow inland sea.

I'm off to Hamble in a couple of weeks for the Fireflies, and rather looking forward to it. But then the kids are going with Grandparents to France, so the family part isn't a factor! Well over 50 entries so far, so it isn't putting too many people off.

PS I'll give my views of the venue after!

PPS For the sailing, I love small inland venues, but they don't work so well for a major event...for the atmosphere, give me a Firefly Nationals at Mounts Bay or Abersoch, but that just might be old memories of 100 pint weeks coming back...I'll be lucky to manage 10 pints this time!

I think it helped to be female at Porthpean - they pulled my boat up the ramp with a tractor thing!

I like Medemblik too - though you are stuffed if you capsize, because it is shallow.

Worst ever: Looe - a nightmare drive through the town to the seafront, clubhouse never open, no space for anything, walk through town to change in a tiny changing room, excessively expensive to park, with no choices.

I always reckon Paignton to be excellent - well run, good sailing, stuff to do, plenty of good camping.
the same, but different...
