That's good to hear. I'm off there to the Wayfarer Nats on 8th Aug. Last time they were there for a Nats it was a record entry. Then, however, the courses went all over the place; this year we're threatened with sausage-triangles such as we could equally well (or better) sail at Grafham; what a waste of a venue (hoping some Wayfarer High-Up will contradict me there). Edit: to add a vote for inside Poole Harbour - scenic saling, lots of landmarks, but watch out for the Condor ferry! Edited by Medway Maniac |

It's interesting to see that (almost) all of the British venues are sea venues. I guess that inland venues aren't regarded that highly (for championships)? |

I guess the majority of classes require their National Championships to be sailed on salt water, certainly this is the rule in the Phantoms.

I never really thought about it that way - and I certainly wasn't aware that Phantoms have that rule. I think that I was pondering why a Class Association would choose an arguably better sea venue (with possibly restricted facilities) over a well-sized inland club/venue.

Champs are not just about the on the water stuff but also enjoying
yourself off them. They can also end up being a family holiday. Seaside
towns tend to be geared up for off the leisure so plenty of places to
stay eat and drink.
No offence but a week at Grafham....... As a pond sailor, sailing on the sea is an experience. Abersoch, Torquay, Plymouth and especially Brightlingsea all get my vote. Venues I'd like to try based on hearsay: Mounts Bay, Tenby. |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Having done a Nationals at Tenby (Scorpion Nats in 2003) I can say it is agreat venue. The club is very firnedly and there is plenty of accom. The only downside is the slog across the beach with the boat when recovering at low tide. Sidmouth is another great club but the steepness of the beach does give rise to lanching and recovery problems. One place I did not rate (although the club was very friendly) was PorthPean, sorry guys but that long ramp to haul to baot up after a long day sailing was a killer! |

I loved Porth Pean! Everyone helped, as I remember, with the boats up the ramp. Nice beach. Good for the family. Proper bit of sea to sail on. And a really nice club, happy to allow my, then 5 year's obsession with shore crab racing in the club house!
