Yeah, manor park is lovely. lots of water (3 lakes) & perfect for what i'm looking to do anyway. Cleaning? well, on my boat i used some Trade Secret boat cleaner to start with then cut the hull with international restorer & polished with international polish - two coats. On emmas, we cleaned the deck with a scourer and some jif! - guess which is cleaner? Still used international polish on the hull though. Interestingly, i lent my girlfriends boat to one of the guys for racing yesterday & whilst behind most of the fleet, we sailed very very close to each other throughout. Both similar standard sailors and it was my boat (number 21) that came out top in both races. (i was using the newer of the two) Managed to get that newish one then i see - brilliant, you'll enjoy it hugely, especially when the breeze gets up!!! Have fun.

If anyone is still looking for a Lightning, there is one for sale at my club (Chertsey). As a Lightning sailor, I would prefer it to stay in the club, but it hasn't been sold yet.
It's an older boats, but I think well priced at £300. As someone else said, the class is one design and I dont think there are any particularly physical weaknesses that make older boats uncompetitive. Ian |

I am now the owner of Lightning 368 74, the boat mentioned above. Very good condition for such an old boat - one owner from new, I believe! I took her out for a test sail in the light stuff this morning at Littleton, and then again when I got her home to Whitefriars, in a force 4. Great fun, quite a powerful sail, fairly stable compared to other singlehanders I've owned, and even a thwart to sit on when the wind drops, which, with very gammy knees, is great! Looking forward to racing her and maybe even doing some open meetings. Is there a Lightning forum type thing anywhere? Nothing on the website? |

The class website is a bit lacking i find. No updates, not much info etc. Shame, as thats usually the way to increase class awareness. Oh well. I have boat number 21, very old indeed but still going strong even in my incapable hands Hugely gusty at my place yesterday and, at 11st nothing, i found myself waaaaaayyy up on the side on more than a million occasions! - huge fun & actually pulled away from all the lasers up to the 2nd mark! - just me and 5 lasers braved the hoolie. Best place for parts/advice, for me, has been John Claridge. Thinking of de-thwarting mine as i saw a new one at the dinghy show - very sexy! Enjoy |

I was hoping that No 74 would stay at Littleton, particularly as we now have a new Mark 2 boat to help boast the fleet, but glad that it's gone to a good home.
I hate the thwart. You really need to get forward on a run in light airs, but the boat buries its nose when the wind picks up and the thwart makes getting back difficult. I too am thinking of dethwarting (what a lovely word). It would be easy enough to set up a Lightning forum on Voy.com Just needs someone to keep an eye on it to take off the spam posts, but I use one for a couple of open forums and spam's not too much of a problem. Anyone interested in a Lightning Forum? Ian |

I've just had an email from Sue of the Lightning association, and they are currently looking to update the website and add a forum to it, so maybe some contact with her (the email link on the site) if you understand how forums and websites work might help all us owners who only know how the user end works! As for dethwarting (agree about the word being good!) I shall have to see how it goes this winter, but I think having knees that work is going to be the main priority for me! |

As it happens, I have recently been in touch with Sue also, to renew my membership which I had let lapse a few years ago. I will mention about a forum.
