Yes- it's been discussed on the MPS forum, not sure on the final conclusion though.

has no one had the idea yet of doing something like making a smaller rig for a musto skiff..? in my opinion, if all it is is a feeder boat for the mps, why change the hull when there is nothing particularly wrong with it? it would also probably have a much larger result on the size of the class.

This is the new lightskiff, constructed by Musto-Skiff-designer Dr. Joachim Harpprecht.
Harpprecht designed the Light Skiff as a little brother for the Musto Skiff to get young sailors into single handed skiffsailing.
Main sail in the video has 7.3 qm, but a new and a little bigger sail is already ordered.
Boom and mast are carbon.
kite/ gennacker: 10qm
length: 3.98m
beam (with wings): 1.6m
weight ready to sail: 55 kg

... I guess they have not yet finalised the final stats

Wing wang, I could be interested in that, I'll presumably be seeing you tomorrow, we shall discuss terms.

Anyway back to the LightSkiff.

Looks a great kids boat; I would have expected many youngsters would love that; how many dinghies are there at 55kgs sailing weight; thats not much more than a Topper.

I have a contender sitting unused and as yet unsailed by me in a garage in Hertford.  I haven't been able to sail it because of injury, but I decided not to sell it because there is a real dearth of good second hand boats out there (I bought this one over the phone without seeing it because I knew it would go otherwise)  This shortage of good second hand boats at reasonable prices is why there isn't much movement into the class.  If I put my boat up for sale tomorrow it would sell very quickly indeed and quite likely got to Europe or Scandinavia.

Grumpf, if you want a 14' kevlar hull that was built for single trap, weighs about 45kg and has a contender rig but with a shorter carbon boom then make me an offer.  The lighter sailors at Hunts love it.
the same, but different...

... and yes, get the Contender a bit more modernised and little lighter, although I don't subscribe to silly low numbers, and it would be a hell of an interesting re-launch.

FWIW- the reason I discounted it nearly 10 years ago as the step up from a Laser was because:

a) £2k didn't buy you much compared to a top-end 2nd hand RS600
b) boom height... just sort that sh*t out and get rid of the biggest barrier to the class

The boom height is something you learn to deal with, even an ungainly lump like me.
Cost has gone up due to adopting carbon masts, but for a club level boat there are bargains around.
To my mind the barrier to the class is the perceived difficulty of sailing to the PY in light/medium wind. And the reputatition for not being much fun on a light day.
And maybe a lack of promotion?
But MPS and RS700's are also looking a lot more affordable lately.

Well it wasn't me it was another guy and i hadn't studied it, I've since noticed it breaks my 14ft rule.

So can anyone just up and make a Contender then?

Even if it's deliberately illegal, better and more modern?

No I know of course it wouldn't be a Contender then would it?

The boom height on the Light Skiff looks a little low, too. But then I guess it won't be being sailed by people with pies where fresh air ought to be.
