just a wee ting for the hull challenged amongst you , "roll tacking " a cat unlike a mono is usually the best way to go , and if not done properly cats can get stuuck heed to wind depending on class . Unlike mono's who can roll tack up beats in no wind to advantage , doesn't work in cat as principles is different , merely speeds up tack .same name though. fra whit thats worth !!!!

A slight back in choppy conditions to help the bow around usually helps.
Where are you sailing ? |

Great, the problem im having at the moment is that im sailing in very shifty inland conditions. Tried Scooby_simons method and theres a definite improvement, the trouble is getting the timing right for coming off the wire, but getting better. My crew posed and interesting question, should the jib on the hurricane be backed at all on the tack or set immediately?

Moving your weight back so you are trapping at the rear beam is suficient enought to get the bow out. As you pass head to wind, come in of the wire, let a little main out to help accelorate out of the tack and can also try and lift the old leward / new windward hull as you pass under the boom and keep it flying as you power up on the new tack. Seen a few "perfect tacks" where the skipper has rolled the boat over on top of them and got out on trap on the other side without the hull touching the water. Looks great when done properly...... Can be dangerous in gust or high winds

scooby simon, I love to sail a Hurricane 5.9 but never seen one here. Its only that I look in there website / Y&Yforum and gozzza (CSSC) that i have a intrest in them. OK lets go back to walking around the back of the sail.you say the main, to let it out is the prob... and its slow going around the back,OK your both on the wire main hard in and your flying OK LETS GO... helm down... give the sheet to the crew....he come's in under the boom letting 15cm or so out from the main.... your hard on that stern....crew's getting his hook... you walk around the back.. hook up, tack the main from the crew, get on the wire pull the main back in...Bingo yes, yes, yes "or" |

Have you ever sailed a Hurricane ? The Boom is still fairly low at the back even with a foot of sheet let out ! You would not be "ducking under" you'll be on your knees to get under !

hurricaned, yes can see you point, it was a figer i pulled out of the sky,but when its so, its a lot at the end of the beat. How much time on a tack wourld you say, you saved by makeing a roll tack in a cat. When its no go around the back, how about still standing hard on the stern then at the right moment, ducking under the boom and up the other side letting that bit of main out as you go under.crew gives you your wire, here go's out on his wire you next sheet in and go for it. Bingo, yes, yes, yes. "or." Mouse |

5 seconds per tack; 3 - 5 tacks per leg, 5 laps so that is between 15 to 25 seconds. Waking around the back is slow as you need to sort the mainsheet out as you also need to let a little bit off in the tack. |
