Spot on Mozzy!
This weekend saw 44 young sailors in Laser 4.7s racing at Lymington - and that's a (relatively) small class compared to Toppers and Oppies. These sailors are being brought on fantastically by the RYA and the Class Associations - if they aren't joining sailing clubs then the issue is with the attraction, marketing and atmospheres of those clubs that are the problem, not the RYA (this could be a 1st, with the Y&Y forum appreciating our National Authority for a change?

It takes a long time for sailors to progress through the RYA squad system. I was in the first RYA Zone squad in 2001 and have only recently started sailing none rya classes after uni. And that's with not taking a gap year and getting a decent salary soon after uni. I expect over the next few years the number of ex-squad sailors will increase as they emerge from the education system.
However, if you want to know where are the products of the RYA system look at the RS200 nationals results. All but one helm in the top ten is ex youth squad. And I think the exception is still on a RYA team racing squad. There are many other RYA system products throughout the fleet. |

As are most youngsters of that age, young enough to enjoy mischief and enough freedom to not get caught (well most of the time anyway). Much of the time I prefer their company to that of the old crusties, so much energy, emthusiasm and optimism. Many's the time it's been wet and windy, all the crusties, me included, huddling in the club house trying to overcome their reluctance and the youngsters shame us into effort. Good on them
I was more agreeing with Maxibuddahs "or something" rather than the white lightening bit. Anyway I'm sure most youngsters have better taste than to drink that crap.
As I indicated earlier: It seems to me to be important to get the youngsters involved in running the club, on the com, in the race office and with the instructing. Don't bollock them when their lack of experience lets them down, give good guidance to bolster their experience.

I agree Paul, my comment was more in jest than serious. The question for a lot of clubs wandering where the inbetweeners are is "is there a uni nearby" and in a vast majority of cases the answer is no. That with the last governments insistence that the only way for people to get on was to go to uni, even if to study the Simpson's, means that the inbetweeners are expected to, and expect to go to uni. Get a job, oh you are so old fashioned.....

You say that but most of our recent 'youth' has stayed until they hit 18 then gone to uni. Most have continued sailing thorugh uni and moved to clibs near where they have settled.
I am sure outside of the sailing club they get up to all sorts (in fact given that some of them are friended on facebook I know they do). At the club though they are a great bunch, a far cry from the disaffected yob oyuth culture that the press would have you believe that all young people are today.

I think that just about sums up the main issue.
Thinking back, I didn't much care for the company of older folk at that age. Granted the generation gap was much wider in the early 70's but I guess at that age our peers were the best company. Edited by GK.LaserII - 20 Feb 12 at 2:11pm |
