Yep, it was like a cup that fitted into the [top of] bottom section (not sure if it was split in 2).

One of the RS boats I was putting together for Juniors recently had a free-floating collar and no rivet. I assume this is what you mean? Looked like a good idea.

A while ago, they were exploring a 'collet' to replace the current mast collar which is riveted in place. The rivet point is a known weakness, and there are currently marks on the upper / lower masts to line up thus when close hauled the rivet hole is in compression rather than extension. I don't know what ever came about with this collet, but it would have allowed the same aluminium tubing to continue to be used without a rivet hole weakening the tube. It would have the added advantage of 360 degree orientation of top section as well as end-to-ending thereby enabling the accumulative stresses to be spread.

The boom sleeve was introduced a long time ago in response to a large number of failures around the kicker (vang to our colonial cousins) fitting due to excessive boom bend. Since this was introduced true is has changed the bencharacterisitcs but it was still possible to get the same amount on tension on just you boom looked like a banana.....
Same with the new controls, whilst they make it easier for non-gorillas to get kicker tension on the total potential (or optimal potential) has not actually changed. It was possible to pull too much using the old controls just as it is with the new controls.
As for the mast bending issue I have had 1 bent top section and that is on my current boat. It seems this issue is on the new builds, change in tube quality perhaps?

but if the intention is not alter the characteristics of the rig then a boom that doesn't bend as much will affect things as more vang can applied controlling the leach tension. If anyone cared about their performance then they would have to buy a new boom otherwise their boom would be bendy. I'm sure most got a new boom as it meant that it didn't break rather than improved leach tension, but the principle is the same.

It would make it a lot harder to permanently bend.
Look at the boom; used to bend and snap. I haven't seen a bent boom since the sleeve.

That would stop them snapping, but not bending.

A well designed sleeve in the current top mast would have solved the problem and would have been easy to retrofit. Too simple and too cheap I guess.
