Interesting thread: Some members take the view that racers should pay more (in annual subs) as they use more of the resources than non-racers. If ever you go to an RYA seminar covering development plans they will always ask most of your attention/effort/resources are directed in your own clubs. Invariably the answer is racing. In my own club with 250 boats, you are lucky if you get a tenth of them racing at any one time. I suspect that this is not uncommon.

All 3 clubs I have been a member of didnt charge for club racing. I believe Parkstone does though, but they charge once for the series rather than per race.
At Alton Water on Saturdays do you find very poor turnouts on naff wind days? I can imagine days with a low wind forecast when only a couple of boats turn up! |

*Very* unusual then... Its probably not fair to make direct comparisons to a conventional member managed and volunteer run club... All the tradeoffs are different. |

Pay for a couple of charity meetings - same reason as Jeffers - but we also operate a bursary for the leading cadet so there is a a small amout (about £200) that goes into this
Pay for open meetings - no discount for members
After that everything is covered by the membership fee

At Hunts all club racing is free to members with 2 exceptions both of which are done for charity in memory of 2 club members who passed away. No one has any objections to these.
With regards to open meetings club members pay the same price as visitors. This is the way it has always been and is only fair (in my opinion).
A place like Alton Water is a bit of a unqiue situation amongst saiing clubs given how it is run and financed, perhaps this justifies the additonal charging!

I've been a member of several clubs over the years and never had an additional bill for racing. Paid racing would put a lot of pressure on the RO to 'get it right'. I certainly wouldn't volunteer for RO duties if I knew people had paid to race.

I can't think of many clubs where members pay for club racing. As others have said it can be a little contentious when members are asked to pay to race in their "home" open meetings, but IMHO most folk pay up. But as far as non open meeting club racing - would expect this for free as part of my annual subs. Guess this may change in future if we ever got to the situation where we had to pay duty crews.

We have a slightly strange situation - AWSC is a commercially run 'sports centre' rather than a sailing club. Racing is run by a mix of paid staff and volunteers from the membership. As an example, our summers Saturday race series consists of two 'round-the-cans' races per day (each about an hour long), members pay £5, visitors pay £7, although members can buy an individual race card for £75 which cover you for most, but not all, the club races over a year. As I've only ever joined this club, I've nothing to compare it with, thus I've no idea if it should be considered as being expensive or not. We do also have some fairly informal racing on Monday and Wednesday evenings which is free to members (Monday, a round-the-cans race with a single start and Wednesday a pursuit over and hour and a quarter). I'm not complaining, but just wondered what the routine was at other venues,

I've belonged to half a dozen clubs over the decades. None charged for club racing. All charged members for opens although in some cases there was a member discount. |

I don't know that its unusual for club members to have to pay the entry fee for open events. After all the prizes have to be paid for. I suppose I can imagine that in a club where most members just went cruising and only a minority raced it might be thought fairer to have an extra fee for racing so the ordinary club members aren't paying for the prizes. I've come across very few clubs like that though: perhaps only those which are on the sea and have their own moorings.
