Non-sailing gear on boats

   Having broken the carbon tiller on my 700 twice now I now have a choice of alternatives. An aluminium landing pole 2.5m free and discarded from my local tackle shop or a steel garden stake 2.1m long which was £3.99 from B&Q. At the moment the garden stake is winning as it doesn't fill with water. However, I am resigned to having to replace it as it will rust although the rubberised power-coat is surprisingly durable. Both options are heavier than the carbon original, by about 200g!

	Bolle safety sunglasses from tooled-up. Look great, do the businessand won't embed themselves in your eyes if you get hit in the face by the boom. And under a tenner a pair.

	Dinghy boots, wetsuits and offshore jackets and dungarees are available from Lidl cheaply. Our favourite lubricant (apart from beer) is silicon spray sold for machine knitters to spray yarn to help it flow through the machine. Comes from BSK in Bedford and is great for mast and boom tracks, kites and chutes and blocks. But NOT sidedecks

	I've used beer cans to shim up worn pilons on a Hobie 16, cut up milk cartons to make shims for the rudders on the same boat and used the end of the beer cans as dust caps for the trailer (still working well). I use screwfix gloves as well, the yellow ones.

	Having just spent some time on the chicken flavoured and other such sites and parted with what seems like a lot of hard earned for not too much I was thinking what (else) could I use from the real world on my boat(s). At the moment it seems - not much. My gloves all come from Screwfix and I'm looking at them for sunglasses next (DeWalt). My halyard tidy is a camping thing from Towsure, I've used the half a millk bottle for a bailing bucket in the past, I heard about using carbon fishing poles for tiller extensions though have never felt the need as yet. I use a leak sealant from Screwfix instead of silkaflex. Padded cycling pants/shorts are great. I sure I could do better than that.
	Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else
