I have to say that our most popular club boats are the GP14s! But I agree about the Wayfarer too.
I do find it hard to believe you'd be buying two dinghies and yet have no safety boat. Safety first, always. |

For a start I would get your club a rescue boat, you never know what might happen. Then sailors won't be worried about trapezing etc. But I have heard quite a lot of good press on the Xenon, so it can't be too bad.

The Xenon does have a clever zip reefing systems and there is the optional trapeze, but on the down side (as a training boat) the kite is quite big and seems a bit tricky to go up and down (as said above) but it is a boat I have/seriously considered. Not sure about it as a training boat though.
A L2K or the traditional Wayfarer would seem better bets IMHO.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

We have an RS Vision as a club boat, I own an L2k and I have sailed a Xenon. I have absolutely no doubt that the L2k is the best training boat. It is sturdy, stable and very easy to rig. Further, the pole system is all very accessible, so if it snarls up (happens very rarely) you can fix it easily. I find the Vision quite tippy, a bit awkward to rig (the students have to get into the boat) and the rudder is way too big. The Xenon is too over canvassed to be an all round training boat.
If you want to come to Hunts and try the L2k and the Vision you'd be welcome. Nessa, Principal Hunts SC. |

The Topper website quotes "Topper's Xenon is the widest dinghy ever made by rotomoulding" A very good Wayfarer sailor bought one at our club, he couldn't reach the center board when he capsized so he sold it.

I sailed one at the Endeavour and found it to be better than I was expecting, it's reasonably quick, responsive and light on the helm and turned the corners well. It was also comfy to hike. The rig is actually quite powerful, I weigh 12 st exactly and my crew was maybe a touch more, and we were hiking hard in about 8 knots. Having said that the rig is very adjustable, although we didn't attempt any tuning the Fireball sailors were seen rolling the boat over on the bank between races to adjust the spreaders, I guess you don't do that unless it's worth doing! On the negative side, the spinnaker system needs looking at as we jammed up on a lot of drops, and my crew felt that the angle of the downhaul line was wrong and could do with being led back to the helm. An easy modification to make if you owned the boat.
It is a bit on the heavy side and flexes visibly when you put the rig tension on, however that would apply to any rotomoulded boat and is just something you'd have to accept with that type of construction.

I might be buying a couple of xenon’s as our club boats over the next few weeks. One of our members is slightly concerned that our current choice of boat carries too much sail especially with the kite and there will be a need to trapeze more. This is not a problem in it’s self but some members don’t do trapeze. He thinks this could be a safety issue as we have no safety boat. The average weight of our crew is about 12st and we tend to stick to the local esterase. I'd also consicer the Vision XL or L2000 if we could find 2 for the right price / age Edited by glent - 18 Feb 11 at 1:18pm |
