I think as far as boat handling goes it is very different doing it in a massive multihull to doing it in any other type of boat, esp with things like wing sails. I think both the Alighi and BOR crew know exactly what they're doing, but in boats like that it's all about straightline speed and a total sacrifice of maouverability. The races were always going to result in a drag race. The length of the legs (20nm) and the boats being used made sure of that. It would have made no diff if it'd been a best of 10 regatta, unless the BOR rig came down there was no way they were going to loose - they were just to fast. Given BOR's performance in previous traditional AC regattas I doubt the cup will stay with them for long though (unless they can find some means of bending the rules in their favour) |

Well, I thought it was fascinating and every bit as exciting as many previous Americas Cups. What I found particularly fascinating was how many mistakes were made by these top professional crews. Alinghi unable to deal with a port/starboard cross at the start, Spithill getting stuck in irons (has he never pointed a Laser head to wind for several seconds?), Alinghi not knowing how to take a penalty at the finish, Alinghi not knowing how to start a match race (I would recommend Virtual Skipper for a tutorial on the subject), Spithill not covering Alinghi's break out to the right when leading by 690m and the nonsense talked by the commentators about Alinghi's failure to slam/dunk on the first cross as they tacked for the mark (they weren't far enough ahead). Berterelli of course is not a professional sailor and well done for sailing his own boat, but he had a lot of high-priced help. But what is this story about the race officer's assistants refusing to start the race in the hope of a long postponement? If true, there should be a Rule 69 referral to IAF and SNG and Alinghi should be banned from al future competition

Seems like they were all so wrapped up in trying to make the most outragous sailing machines ever (not withstanding small ripples on the water that even a Topper could handle), that they forgot about the pre-start which is just as much a part of 'match racing'... if you can call it that. I would be happy to lease my decidedly low tech waterproof casio wrist**tch to any future contenders to help them time their manouveres. Obviously the swiss don't make timepieces like they used to! |

What a non-event. Millions spent on a best-of-3 drag race. Surely they could have stretched it to 5 or even 7 races. And whats all the nonsense about the Swiss not even being able to get their super hi-tech machine into (or was it out of) a certain patch of starting area before race 2 with only one other bloody big boat to keep an eye on ? Bet there were a few dinghy sailors watching claiming they could do better than that ... Having said this, I'd love a go on either of them !! |

Hmm, not sure. Could selective memory be playing a part? Apart from Freo when the Doctor came visiting I think the vast majority of monohull races were pretty damn boring too. Is three overtaking manouvers and two start line penalties in two races much off the par? That is the issue with match racing. If a faster boat gets ahead that tends to be pretty much that for the rest of the race. |

The boats, the technology, and the speed were massively impressive..... for about 5 minutes. After that I got a bit bored and changed channel. It was totally one sided and really quite rubbish. The monohull racing was much more exciting and engaging to watch.

Watching the main coverage (on sky sports online, AC site or BMW Oracle site-all the same feed/commentary) whilst also watching the Sailing Anarchy coverage from the bar (who had access to the virtual spectator software and were making good use of it), chatting in the channel on there and posting on two forums at once helped enliven it!

HHHOOOOORRRRAY.... the yanks won, let's hope this is the last time we see 90ft mulithulls (in this competition*) and we go back to a match-racing competition, first couple in AAC's were fantastic, quite a few in the 12's were great = this has been technologically amazing but otherwise not good for sailing
*hey I like 'em, in fact I think BOR in particular is bl**dy amazing, just want this to be more about match-racing than drag-racing (or god forbid, lawyers) Edited by getafix |

Feeling sorry for vegans since it became the latest fad to claim you are one
