Er tough one that, let me think now.

GP14 or a new Alto.

Anyone who get's that one wrong is just mental.

You're right of course... why didn't I see it before? I'll get an Alto to cruise around in with my 6 year old son and his mates on sundays and I'll race it with my adult crew on a wed night.

Class racing, re-sale value, plenty of opens if you want. Or playing billy no mates sailing round by yourself in an orphaned boat once the initial launch hype goes bang. Depends what you want from your sailing I guess, personally I think the UK needs another dinghy class like a hole in the head.

We are buying two second hand GPs as training boats for all the good reasons outlined above.  I've never sailed one, but I'm looking forward to using them.
the same, but different...

Ever noticed how the same folk always win class racing.

Ever wondered why?

Because they are better than everyone else? I dont see what your point is here?!

I guess I must be one of the wrong'ns then because I'd far rather spend my money on a pimped out speeds gp than an alto.  Sailed one a few times and loved them upwind.  Wasn't really happy sitting to leeward on the lighter reaches and runs but that's just because I'm not used to conventional kite boats.

Having a GP 14 for cruising I must say it does exactly what it is designed to do. Be General Purpose. May be that is why it a new race spec one is £9k. For cruising I must say it is a lovely well balanced boat that is easy to control. I am sure if I replaced my cotton sails, wooden battens for a new suit and a kite that I could get some good results at club level. (Although I think I would only ever race the 300 or a decent Mirror with the kids). I remember many years ago, class racing a very old and heavy class in light airs. It was some of the tightest and exciting racing I have ever had. It’s funny how the person whom is the most outspoken about the older designs is a rather old design himself!

Er Why?

It's only because y'all have been brainwashed into thinking that.

Horses for courses.

If I've got got fleet racing in GPs why would I by an Alto.

For handicap sailing put the Alto on the list.

There are so many classes in the UK and there are plenty of clubs where there are class strong holds. These do wax and wane. There may be still clubs where there you could only sail certain classes (are there still any clubs like that?)

The water that you sail on will dictate what is appropriate. So that why clubs where there is  GP14/Enterprise stronghold won't get usurped by RS800's etc.

Class racing always out trumps handicap racing.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else
