On Sunday at Marconi Sailing Club the Commodore Simon Elwell presented a cheque for £18,860 to Nick Back of the Cirdan Sailing Trust. This is the amount raised during a weekend back in June when the club hosted the annual East Coast Piers Race. The race is a 50 mile long distance race for catamarans starting from Osea Pier turning at Walton Pier before retracing its route back to Marconi SC. There is also a shorter course for the slower catamarans which turns at Colne Point to make a 29 mile race. The majority of profits from the races are donated to sailing related charities with £500 being donated to Essex Air Ambulance. While receiving the cheque, Nick Back stated that the race has raised over £100,000 since 1996 which has helped over 1000 underprivileged adults and young people. Even in difficult circumstances with heavy fog the race committee managed to start the race this year and get every competitor back safely. This years ECPR was won by Simon Northrop & Finn Anderson with Jenny Ball winning the Colne Point Race. A big thank you must go to everyone involved in the race, competitors, sponsors and volunteers. Marconi Sailing Club look forward to welcoming everyone once again next year on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th July.
