2nd 4000 purchased. Our 4K fleet is now 100% larger - or is
that 200%?

One more to go.

I too am in Weymouth. 6'3'' 95k crew changes from daughter 60k to son 45/50k. So hiking the 400 is really hard when it blows, thinking a trapese would make life a little easier

Not raced 400's only sailed them in Minorca but..

400 better in constrained venues (ponds etc) as easier to tack/gybe, ditto the centreboard is more shallows friendly (lakes etc) as will rotate upwards if hit bottom. Possibly easier with a really novice crew - they could sit in the middle with back against the hoop and perhaps more suitable for 'cruising' . Need helm & crew to both hike upwind/down. Narrower competitive weight range

4000 needs a crew that can get on the wire, but good boat to learn to trap in when the racks are set to 4/5. Probably higher mainsheet tensions for helm in the 4K. More of a 'standing up' boat than the 400, but very nice for the helm on the tramps on rack 6/7. Wide competitive weight range - helms/crews easily between 60 & 100 kg each - 2x100 would be a bit much but have raced at 95 with 85 kilo crew and been reasonably competitive.

Where do you sail?

I raced the 4k for 5 years when it first came out, imo it's an excellent boat with good points and bad ones. If you want to club race only what difference will it make if there are no new ones?

We had an all up weight of 25 stone with no racks and had some very good results, interestingly we always did well in very light wind situations and very windy, medium or average winds were our failing.

the boats are well built and still have a good following with some very experienced sailors in it, who do lots of training for the newbies.

If you really are keen give one a go you wont be disappointed.

I really would'nt worry too much about weight, wing wangs
etc. The 4k is a great boat, far better than the Vago and
once you have mastered it will be really enjoyable(this
coming form someone with an ISO which is a close rival
!).
Like any of the 'older' boats they have been tried and
tested and are pretty much bullet proof (unlike some more
modern pretenders!).Spares are available from Sailboats.
I
also have a 5k and like the 4k these boats have an
enthusiastic following and you will not be short of
opportunities for class training and help where
needed.....a test sail in a local boat will have you
sold...lots of boat for not much money.

PS..if I remember correctly there was an offer from
sailboat deliveries in Portsmouth a while ago for a boat
for a test sail...it will be on the CA chat forum
