At the risk of resurrecting a 10+ year old thread. Yes, I have just got one and have probably even more questions.. David

I've just spent a pleasant hour or so rooting through my folders of extracts from old Y&Y's, and I haven't found it. In fact, I'm starting to wonder if the single article I had in mind really existed, or whether i've amalgamated different articles in my head. What I did find, on the back of another article I'd saved, was a page of photos of the some of the boats, "Parker's superb-looking 404" included, under trial - capsized! That was page 59 in the 3rd January 1992 issue, but whether it was part of a full article or rather, as I suspect, merely part of one of Jonathan Clark's superb columns, I can't say. I suspect there had been an earlier article on the various designs and this was merely a few shots/comments on the trials. Maybe someone at Y&Y could look up the issue and tell you? |

Thanks Olly. Medway Maniac, I know this is probably a long shot, but do you know the Y&Y magazine issue which covered the 404, 405 trials. I am trying to get an article copy from Y&Y but they need to narrow it down. We are racing tommorow night, with a 1110 handycap!! Many Thanks Edited by phil_box |

we used to sail off py 1050 with the full sails and was about right. the smaller main is crap i dont think i ever used mine. and the large main was very high aspect try a lark sails but it was also lose footed and taller. somthing off a laser 3000 may fit or try a hobie 405 just try some. but if not if u ring parkers then they will put you intouch with the people that have the sail infomation as i had a new jib made.

Thanks medway maniac, your PY estimates seem to tally with our boat performance. We have the small rig and just about compete with a laser radial (py1101). Could really do with getting our hands on a full size main! In anything but stong winds I think we are just too heavy (148kg) for the small rig. I assume the sails aren't the same as another boat and that we will require a costly one-off item? Pinnel and Bax make are current sails, any recommendations? Olly seeing some more pics would be cool, interested to see your sails, rigging etc. to check we are doing things right! Many thanks for your continued help..

I wasn't on the panel, but just read about the trials in Y&Y at the time - they gave a pretty in-depth report with photos of all the boats. Compared to the other boats in the the trials the large-rig 404 seemed more powerful, i.e. like it needed more crew weight than the target group of sailors had. The small rig seemed a bit of a mis-match for the hull. I think the RYA made the right decision in choosing the 405 according to the criteria they had in mind, but when I saw the Hobie version it didn't look as attractive as the prototype. Still a good little trap boat for (very) small people though. I raced against a 404 regularly at one time in my Laser 2, and I recall we were quicker in any sort of wind, but that the 404 was pretty nippy in light airs. Despite being the handicapper for our pursuit races at the time, I don't have a record of the boat's PY, just the personal figure i allocated. I think, though, that the large rig was a couple of percent slower than the L2, thus roughly 1055 in today's money. The small rig was 5% slower than that, i.e. about 1110. |

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum but sail a 404 with telescope nerd. Does anyone know the PY for a 404 (large and small rig). Medway magic, were you part of the RYA selection team? What do you mean be adult (too unstable?). Many Thanks |
