The one on Rebell was about 12 sqm smaller than the big one, and in 3/4 ounce - stock from Norths so there should be some knocking around. It was a lot flatter though, so suited to reaching as well. Norths also have an assym' design for the platu for the standard pole. If you measure the leeches and the midgirth of the large kite, subtract 50cm from both then you could go out and find another boats spinnaker which might fit- guess an Impala or a 762 or an FC8m heavy kite. |

The "schplatu" as it has earned itself a name is indeed developed for the light winds.
It was made for thailand, phuket and so on, where breezes are moderate as were budgets- hence a steel keel. But given you are either from a dinghy or fast sports boat background and you can tune the rig on and off the water, it will be a blast in 18knts plus. The small kite is pretty useful when it blows , but be careful with the main with a reef in it- the Norths stock OD mains are allegedly weak if over tensioned- reef it down, velcor strop it to the boom, and then put some depth back in it's foot using the reef line like an outhaul. |

Hi Neil,
As far as I know Byron calculate an approximate PY figure from hull and sail data, in much the same way as IRC works. If you google 'Byron Cruiser Handicaps' you shuld find it. I was indeed referring to Warthog which in light winds would achieve well under 892. They don't seem to like breeze, though. They sail a good deal slower in anything over about 16knots. It is hard to sail in mixed fleets, but every boat has its day and from what I've seen Platu 25 works well in light to average winds. We're still sailing off 880 in the Projection which unfortunately won't be changed because we achieve pretty much the same! The P762 is slightly heavier but sail areas aren't totally different. The Platu 25 has a much rounder aft section which makes it relatively unstable in a blow. |

Hi Chic I have never heard of that handicap sytem, probably just as well by the look of the handicap. When or where do they use this system? We actually used 892 because of the boat on the Forth called Warthog, I think. It is hard to sail to in mixed fleets. |

Don't let them see the Byron Software handicaps list then, it places the Platu 25 at 862! We raced against one from time to time - it was hugely quick in light winds. |

The Windermere PY for Ben 25's is 925, I would be happy with that,, if I can persuade the race committee. Corms |

There was a Platu 25 racing on the Forth with a handicap of 892... It doesn't sound far wrong. |

I have a projection 762 with IRC of .964. We sail off 880 at our local club, which is a bit harsh and 905 at another club, which is a bit generous. B25 off 900 is about right.
