Yep, tried that - easy with Fusion, but a different game with Gemini because there are two cores you cant open the inner core out in the same way to feed in the taper. I also tried to put it inside the outer core but that did not work because I had threaded the two cores through each other to form the split. Perhaps if I had tapered first and then threaded the cores through each other afterwards it may have worked.

It is possible to do this. You have to do a good job of tapering down the outer and feed it into the larger inner cores. I use a wire tool made from a folded piece of 0.8mm wire to pull the outer through the inner as it doesn't get stuck like some fids tend to. ( I got this from a video on you tube Rooster or P&B I cant remember which).

Thanks for the response John, given your experience I have decided to leave it to the pros and have ordered one from Ian Turnbull Marine: < ="-" ="text/; =utf-8">http://www.ianturnbullmarine.co.uk/

I have recently replaced my split tail main sheet using Gemini. The split was very easy to do, as was the splice onto the transom fittings. The one problem I had was with finishing the outer core. I was hoping I could taper it into the inner for a nice clean splice, but this proved difficult with the double inner cores preventing the outer from being threaded inside them - I couldnt get the inners to open out enough to be able to feed the outer inside. The second attempt was to split the outer and taper each half down each of the splits of the tail, but that didn't hold in place and looked a mess. In the end, I just trimmed the outer and whipped and stitched it, which then did make me wonder if it was worth the additional cost of using Gemini rather than a more conventional split tail with a whipped and stitched tail. The other downside is that it is only available in 7mm I would prefer 8mm. |

This thread is a few years old now, what is the latest thinking on this as I need a new split tail mainsheet?
These dual core ropes sound good but how easy is it to achieve a decent split that flows through the pulley at the end of the boom well?

I thinking about getting some of this Marlow Gemini dual
core. I've not done any splicing or whipping before so what would be the recommended method for tidying up the outer layer once it's been stripped back? I'm assuming some lock stitching to stop the outer moving and then some whipping to stop it fraying or would the outer need to be brought into the two cores some how? |

Marlow Excel Gemini just turned up in my new Sailboats catalogue - £4.74 per metre. (It's not on the website yet) Looks the business.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

On a Lark there isn't really the need to have any extra purchase. On boats like fireballs theres sometimes an extra purchase between the twart and half way along the boom but thats down to personal preference. |
