Grant was asked this question tonight on the Radio. His reply was in 3 stages, but the main reason was, when the idea was first talked about they were going to use the Louis Vuitton Cup that ETNZ won and since they are the holders they would defend and use the round robin to work up to speed. Louis Vuitton pulled rank and have created a new Cup for the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series. The antics by Alinghi are just to try and stir it up a bit, make a few headlines, just a bit of banter.

I'm wondering if it's some sort of wierd attempt by ETNZ to highlight the folly of Alinghi's suggested format for the AC.

Except for two things: 1. This is not the Louis Vuitton Cup and 2. Even if it were, historically the holder of the Louis Vuitton Cup has still had to slog it out to the final along with everybody else.

TNZ go straight though as the current holder of the Louis Vuitton cup.

I suspected that this might be the answer but dimissed it after all the stupidity that has gone on before, now we have Alighi taking their turn to be childish This reminds me of the children's playground principle of "you can only play with my football if I can be captain of the team" We laugh at some of the antics that F1 motor racing people get up to but I think the AC have beat them hands down (or up their ....) - talk about hypocrites. The only good thing about all this is that the vast majority of the world could not care less about sailing, so they don't get to know what ridiculous things are going on |

Because they're the ones who organised it. Everyone entering knew of this arrangement.
This is how the AC would be if Alinghi get their way, as it happens. |
