IMO the foot loop is essential in breeze, you can trapeze
lower, with a straighter back leg = faster = more apparent wind = better VMG |

Well, on Skiffs you need to be very careful about your weight placement. You have to sit in the middle of the boat until it begins to lean on its own. If you try and sit on the side when the boat isn't leaning it will go straight over.
While you are getting used to the boat, I would make sure you had quite a bit of cunningham, outhaul etc. on just so the sail isn't too overpowered and you can grasp everything without worrying about keeping the boat from capsizing too much. I would recommend foot loops aswell, just to help with the grip issue, and to keep you nice and stuck onto the boat. I have seen a few people get ripped (if that's the right word?) from their 29ers in waves etc. I haven't sailed a 29er before but I have looked at them before, and talked to people who sail them so I can't really say much more. "Helm bum loop"? You me jamming your foot under the helm's arse to use him as a toe loop? I don't see a reason NOT to have footloops. The extra weight is minimal, they are useful most of the time, essential in the breeze, and it saves you having to stick your foot up your mates butt.

After my wife had a little trip around the forestay in the 29er we put footstraps in. Having 75kgs in the back of the boat did help keep the bow up though |

It makes a difference, we use them on the lake as soon as theres enough breeze to really swing it down

Well next time it's breezy and flat, use them, get him to get that back leg straight and you'll see how much more power you have.

yea, we had them, he just never felt the need to use them. then again almost all of our sailing (bar a few outings) were in relatively flat water.
