i put the 600 mast light end forward on the road trailer because if you put it the other way round you have a hole facing forwards catching all the flies and muck and filling the mast up. this is because i take the foot out of the mast before towing incase it falls out whilst towing, would be a bit annoying turning up to sail and finding the mast foot was on the M27 somewhere.

Longer roof rack bars. When I was young and had a mirror, we car topped that. The bars were a bit narrow, so my dad made up some wooden bars a bit longer that bolted tight to the original bars. With a bit of thought, you could even design the extensions to have cut outs or fittings to hold the spars even more securely. |

I turned up to test my new car with my byte mast. I told the salesman if it didn't fit in then there was no sail (getit?), he couldn't quite believe what he was hearing/seeing |

Mast foot on the lightboard for me. Argument for this: the extra windage of the fat end being in the air forces the thin end down thus creating more downforce on the pintles. Also the fat end is much more likely to start bouncing due to larger mass creating even more down force with a bit of wiggle to completely shag your pintles. Edit: Actually I always put a rope around the mast at about it's centre and apply a little extra downforce to stop any bouncing. From experience at work, constant static force is much kinder than vibration or shock in mechanical assemblies. But do you really save by putting on top. Is it more fuel efficient to tow a boat rather than to have it on the roof? Alternatively find someone with a double trailer to take your boat to Italy - that is what I have done. |

Always put the heavy end over the mast support.
I used to roof top a 470 to avoid paying extra on ferries and toll roads. We would put it right way up on its trolley (with a lot of help from our friends) and then tie the mast on top of all that. Never had any problems and considering doing the same with the contender for Italy this summer. |

Always heavy end on the trailer mast support! Not such an issue with full carbon rigs or wheelie bars - bar, or top section of 800 mast (knew these boats have a use) between the foot loops on the wheelie bars, then doesnt matter which way the mast is, and doesnt load up the pintles which can become loose!

....just a thought, not tried it myself as the L2 has a 2 piece mast, tie the mast to the side of the rack on the upright bits. Or tie it to the underside of the rack....could tie it to the nearside door handles and see how many pedestrians you can pick up.

Fans- transporting Lasers and Toppers I often tie the mast sectons onto the trolley. This is assuming the boat is upside down and the trolley is ontop. |
