Yes, he has sailed it on his own, in light winds. He can helm really well and always sits on the windward side etc. Obviously he has not mastered wind awareness or sail trim yet, but i get him to follow me and he sails along quite nicely and enjoys it. The main point is that there is plenty of room for us both and it is stable and responds well. If I wasn't 15(ish) stone I reckon I would have had it planing in the strong winds when i took my, err, i mean his, boat out on my own. |

Mine are a fair amount older and still have more fun using boats as access to better dream worlds than actually sailing them, unless the wind is perfect.

Your 3 year old sails on his own?! I take my three year old son out in a club oppie - he spends most of his time looking for sharks and pirates and watching a spider crawling along the boom.

Hello all. I was looking for a suitable boat to buy for my 3 year old earlier this year and considered the Oppie. Then I saw the Bug at LBS. The front wheel is optional and a no cost alternative is an alloy trolley. I opted for the trolley. I've sailed it regularly all season with my 3 year old. It is a brilliant training boat with room for a 14ish stone dad as well as my son. It sails really well and within 6 or 8 weeks he was sailing it on his own. Every time I launch it I get nothing but positive comments from other club members. If you don't like it, stick with your Optimist (which was designed in 1947). Regards. |

why don't you stay in 1970 and not come out! bugs are the perfect transition boat. No nine year old could rig a Pico by themselves. Any nine year old would find a BUG easy to sail, easy to rig and they are bullet proof! Oh and they reef, so the age range is much wider than any other boat. Edited by moggyt |

Wandering round with some B14ers lateish yesterday, we were very amused by the "exhaust pipe" handles- definitely ripe for some "pimping". Having said that, it makes a very stable wheelbarrow.

Technically, no, you can't pop a wheelie.
But you could try an 'endo' instead... |

Um, I'll tell you what, you buy one from Laser and try it, if you can, then we'll all be down to give it a go. Optional Extras Can you have an extra two wheels fitted at the back so you don't have to lift it at all. A bit like a rib, you can get transom wheels for them. Or for the even lazier parents (kids) one similar to the Sea-legs rib also on show at the boat show: Edited by radixon |

I have heard that said many times but I have seen no evidence of it ... I'm pretty well travelled and have often seen Lasers kicking around in odd places; of course you always see them on the beach in the Caribbean but if there are 200,000 of them where are they all? |
